This paper presents a new full hybrid system with a PM type DMPM using a new mechanism in the decoupling of the internal combustion engine (ICE) optimal working points and the power train output shaft operation points. In this paper, the working points of this system are explained. The comparison of system efficiencies is made. The results suggest that the system proposed can obtain the same or even higher efficiency than that of Toyota Hybrid System using high speed planetary gear set. The torque coupling and decoupling of the inner and outer motors of DMPM during the steady and start-stop transient states are analyzed. A control scheme is proposed. The research results are used to drive a 38kW/52kW PM type DMPM system loaded on a SUV of about 2700kg. The maximum speed of the SUV reaches 122.5km/h.

A new type of electric machine with two free rotating rotors [dual mechanical port (DMP)] is investigated in this paper. Since this DMP machine has a squirrel-cage outer rotor, it is named as SCDMP machine. First, the electromagnetic characteristic of the SCDMP machine is analyzed. Then, the transient model and steady-state model of the SCDMP machine are derived. The proposed machine models are verified by finite element method and simulation. The results show that the proposed models accurately represent the unique electromagnetic characteristics of the SCDMP machine.Index Terms-Dual mechanical port, electric machine modeling, hybrid electric vehicle, squirrel-cage.

Summary There are growing interests in electric and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) because of environmental concerns. Recent efforts are directed toward developing an improved propulsion system for electric and HEVs applications. In a conventional series–parallel HEV, a planetary gear is used to integrate the power of internal combustion engine and two electric machines into the drive train so that the engine can always operate with the highest efficiency while the vehicle runs at any desired speed and torque. However, two electric machines and associated power inverters along with a planetary gear make the HEV drive train much more complicated and bulky in size. Dual‐mechanical‐port electrical machine (DMPM) is a new breed of energy conversion device with more compact and integrated structure that can potentially realize an efficient electrical variable transmission for HEV applications. This machine can replace the planetary gear and two electric machines of conventional structure in order to make their structures much simpler. Applying a proper power management and control strategy to have a good driving performance for a series–parallel HEV based on DMPM are the main contributions of this paper. Because Toyota Prius II (Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., Torrance, CA, USA) is a well‐known series–parallel HEV, the parameters of this vehicle are chosen as a practical example in simulation results.
