Repairing a defect in the late phases of software development can be a hundred times more expensive than finding and fixing it during the requirements and design phase. Software inspection is a technique that may be used to aid in the identification of defects during early stages of the process and avoid propagation of such defects to later phases. The cost-benefit of inspections may be significant if they are efficiently performed. Since this process is affected by several quality factors, the analysis of the overall context of inspection may become complex. Project managers are reluctant to introduce inspection due to uncertainty regarding its real benefits. This paper presents a system dynamics model, which is a descriptive technique for systems modeling and simulation and involves several variables that strongly influence inspection efficiency. The influence levels of model variables are quantified based on real or empirical experiments reported in the literature, in order to approximate model results to values that would be obtained in the real world. The model allows the reproduction of scenarios without paying the costs and facing the risks of a real project implementation. Therefore, it enables the analysis of inspection effects on the software development process.

RUP-based development has proven successful in various contexts. The iterative and phased development approach provides a framework for how to develop software efficiently and effectively. Yet, there are plenty of occasions that the projects go off-track in terms of the key parameters of the project such as quality, functionality, cost, and schedule. The challenge for the software project manager is to bring the project back on track. Simulation, in general, and system dynamics based simulation in particular, is established as a method to pro-actively evaluate possible scenarios and decisions. The main contribution of this paper is a method called SIM-DASH; it combines three established techniques for providing decision support to the software project manager in the context of RUP-based development. SIM-DASH consists of (i) a system dynamics modeling and simulation component for RUP-based construction, (ii) dashboard functionality providing aggregated and visualized information for comparing actual versus targeted performance, and (iii) knowledge and experience base describing possible actions that have proven successful in the past for how to bring a project back on track. As part of (iii), decision trees and experiencebased guidelines are used. The interplay between these three components provides pre-evaluated actions for bringing the current project iteration back on track. As proof-of-concept, a case study is provided to illustrate the key steps of the method and to highlight its principal advantages. For this purpose, SIM-DASH was substantiated retrospectively for a real-world SAP web system development project within the banking field. While the method is applicable for different issues and scenarios, we study its impact for the specific issue of adding personnel to testing and/or development in order to ensure improved project performance to achieve established quality levels of feature development.

Project management is widely studied and has several tools that aid in the efficiency and effectiveness of software production. However, in project management, numerous risk factors are involved in the development of software. These risk factors interact in a dynamic and non-linear way, hindering decisionmaking. The objective of this paper is to present a model of systems dynamics, which is a descriptive technique used for modeling and simulating systems, involving risk factors that strongly influence the development of software. The model generated is a tool that aims to assist project managers in their decision-making. The relationships between variables were extracted from actual or empirical experiments available in the literature, thus bringing the model results closer to the real world. The model enables reproducing scenarios in which real-world tests would be costly or dangerous to be carried out, allowing the impacts of risks in software development process to be analyzed.
