With the advent of activity-based modelling, transport planners’ focus has shifted from isolated trips to tours. Tours are series of interconnected trips that start and finish at home. There are different types of tours; we focus on two: hwh (start at home; go to work; and then go back home) and hw+wh (where + represents a non-work activity). Tour types introduce a new dimension to the traditional problem of travel mode choice, as the mode choice might be influenced by the type of tour. This study attempts to measure and compare the relationship between tour type and mode choice using three different modelling approaches: Multinomial Logit (MNL); Nested Logit (NL) and Cross-Nested Logit (CNL). We compare each approach using secondary data from a larger survey: 24-h daily activity patterns of 420 commuters between Bekasi and Jakarta; one of the busiest commuting routes in Indonesia. Among other results, we found that gender and income significantly influence commuter’s choice of mode and that reducing travel time and cost can increase the ridership of public transport. Furthermore, the NL and CNL models showed significant improvement over the simpler MNL when grouping the alternatives based on tour types. This points to a significant influence of the tour type on the mode choice. Policy recommendations to increase traveler’s wellbeing are also formulated.

Commuters’ Willingness to Shift to Metro: a Case Study of Salaya, Thailand

The rapid expansion of new metro systems in the last two decades shows a globally growing interest in urban rail transit infrastructure. Every time a new metro line is opened, it has the potential to change the existing modal split, which is usually dominated by private (car or motorcycle) transport users. For each new or expanding metro system, a feasibility study is conducted, which focusses mainly on existing mobility issues, travel demand, new infrastructure proposed, and environmental and financial aspects of a new metro project. In these documents, specific methodologies are applied, using local parameters and suitable software, for demand forecasting purposes. However, not much attention is usually dedicated to potential users, their modal choice characteristics, willingness to shift to metro and conditions under which such a shift would be encouraging. Therefore, it is often unclear what the actual public perception of a new service is and their interest in using it in the future. As a consequence of various shortcomings in feasibility studies, the actual demand for metro services is often much lower than originally predicted. Hence, a survey targeting a group of potential metro users located close to a planned metro line was designed to investigate people's willingness to shift to metro and include soft factors that could facilitate such a change. Next, a case study of the Red Line whose final metro stop is at Salaya, Thailand, was selected, and a sample of 667 respondents, both staff and students based at a nearby university campus, was investigated. Results revealed that 90% of the sample is willing to shift to metro (easy and medium shifters) for a future 20-km trip between Salaya and Bangkok, while only 10% remains sceptic (difficult shifters). Moreover, there are some differences in shifters' priorities, where easy shifters see factors such as reliable timetable, good mode connectivity and seamless station-campus connection as significantly more important than medium or difficult shifters do. Also, there is a significant association between a mode type currently used for Salaya and Salaya-Bangkok commutes, where private transport users (51% of staff and 43% of students) have already shifted to public transport. Based on the outcomes of the study, recommendations are addressed to stakeholders involved in the Red Line, as well as in other new metro projects in Thailand and internationally, and to those who aim to better understand the needs of potential customers in order to facilitate their shift to metro as a preferred mode of transport in the future.

Reliability is defined as the ability to adhere to a preplanned schedule or to defined intervals and a fixed travel time. Reliability is expected to be high particularly in metropolitan cities. To achieve this, high-cost investments such as rail systems that are operated independently of private vehicle traffic and simultaneous passenger information systems are needed. The social benefit to be made from these investments depends largely on how it is perceived, rather than the magnitude of the reliability. In this study, it is aimed to develop a parametric support data for benefit analysis of investments in terms of reliability. It is investigated whether the purpose of travel and personal characteristics are effective in the sense of reliability or not. Parametric models are developed by using multiple logistic regressions with the collected data by the help of the stated preference survey. When the model findings are examined, it is found that parameters such as gender, presence at the university for 1-3 years, use of public transportation, etc. are effective in tending to direct transportation modes that constitute a higher sense of reliability. In the reliability scenario model testing the high risk taking behavior, it is found that disability for using metro as a transfer alternative and living for a long time in the city generate a tendency to shorten the travel time by taking more risks in reliability. It is concluded that reliability is perceived differently, even on different trip purposes of the same person, and therefore it should be considered as a socio-economic parameter like age, gender, income, etc. on its own, rather than a cost weighting component in transportation demand models.
