Mobile computing: a user study on hedonic/utilitarian mobile device usage

Abstract: Intrinsic motivators of technology beliefs have received scant attention in the technology acceptance literature despite indications of their efficacy. This study uses the framework of TAM to explore the effect of intrinsic variables on technology beliefs and user behavior. Specifically, we examine the effect of cognitive absorption and playfulness on user beliefs including perceived enjoyment and perceived usefulness within the context of mobile devices. Moreover, we manipulate the hedonic and utilitarian pur… Show more

“…Numerous studies have identified two types of system values: hedonic and utilitarian (Holsapple, 2007;Van Der Heijden, 2004;Wakefield & Whitten, 2006), whereas hedonic systems are related to entertainment and are oriented to pleasure, utilitarian systems are more instrumental and related to productivity (Kim & Hwang, 2012). The personalization of some features within the internet based services like e-commerce, mobile commerce or social commerce has made the systems more hedonic complementing the utilitarian value of them (usefulness, accomplishment) (Dlodlo, 2014) being the systems both useful and enjoyable (Malik et al, 2013).…”

“…Hence, till today, the Cognitive Absorption Theory developed by Agarwal and Karahanna (2000) has been used in studies related to the acceptance of technology such as perceived ease of use, usefulness and intention besides many studies that frames user and computer interaction such as acting, effective quality and individual innovation. (Saade, Bahli 2003;Roca, Chiu, Jose Martınez, 2005;Chung, Tan, 2004;Zhang, Li, Sun, 2006;Zhang, Li, 2004;Serenko, Bontis, Detlor, 2006;Ngai, 2005;Newman, 2005;Qiu, Benbasat, 2005;Wakefield, Whitten, 2006;Shang, Chen, Shen, 2003). With this scale development study which is the first one on cognitive absorption in Turkey, it is hoped to contribute to studies that examine experiences related to technology.…”

“…Research continues to advance the Technology Acceptance Model, which has become the most often employed and most influential IS theory (Wakefield and Whitten, 2006;Benbasat and Barki, 2007;Williams et al, 2009). Recent applications include SMS services (Lu et al, 2010) and acceptance of shopping websites (Ha and Stoel, 2009).…”
