Mixing of floodwaters in a restored habitat wetland in northeastern Ontario

Abstract: Water levels, nutrient supplies, and vegetation cover are key issues in the successful management of wetland habitats. The Hilliardton Marsh Provincial Wildlife Area is a newly restored wetland in northeastern Ontario, Canada about 200 ha in size. It is entirely enclosed by a dike. To maintain water levels, water is pumped into Cell I from the adjacent Blanche River and is allowed to flow into Cell 2 and other cells in the wetland by water-control devices bctwecn the cells. This study explores the effectivenes… Show more

“…Regionally rare birds were observed on the site and included Upland Sandpiper (for scientific names of birds see Table 3), Short-eared Owl, Eastern Meadowlark, and LeConte's Sparrow. Preliminary post-construction vegetation (Gilbert 1997) and bird surveys (Huizer and Henshaw 1997*) were completed in 1997 before the wetland was fully constructed. Results indicated that shallow water wetland and marsh habitat was created and that waterfowl and other wetland birds were attracted to the wetland (Huizer and Henshaw 1997*).…”
