Mixing methods in a qualitatively driven way

Abstract: A B S T R AC T This article makes an argument for a 'qualitatively driven' approach to mixing methods. It focuses on the value of mixed-methods approaches for researching questions about social experience and lived realities. It suggests that 'qualitative thinking' is a useful starting point for mixing methods, but that it is ultimately more helpful to think in terms of multi-dimensional research strategies that transcend or even subvert the so-called qualitativequantitative divide. Mixing methods helps us to … Show more

“…Of course, in terms of the quantitative data alone, this possibility cannot be substantiated due to the primary limitation of the study: the absence of a control group. (The reason for this omission is that, unlike most mixed methods research, the research was 'qualitatively driven' (Mason, 2006), and therefore did not prioritize a conventional experimental design. That is, the primary focus of the research was qualitative interviews, with quantitative data gathered as an adjunct to this for the purposes of 'interrogating' or elucidating the qualitative data.)…”

“…La incorporación de la creatividad (Bagnoli, 2009), puede alentar a pensar fuera de la caja, generando nuevas formas de interrogar y comprender (Mason, 2006). Los dibujos pueden funcionar también como disparadores o rompehielos (Morrow, 1998); también ha prosperado el desarrollo de métodos basados en el arte, como, por ejemplo, el autorretrato, la elicitación gráfica /y la línea del tiempo (Bagnoli, 2009;Boydell et al, 2012).…”

“…Avtorja sta uporabila kvalitativno metodo za proučevanje konstrukcije prostorske identitete, odvisne od različnih tež-ko izmerljivih dejavnikov (Mason, 2006). Kot navaja Manuel Castells (2009), ta proces vedno poteka v kontekstu, ki ga določajo različna razmerja moči, in vključuje različne elemente zgodovine, geografije, veroizpovedi, spolne usmerjenosti itd.…”
