Mixed Methods Research in Knowledge Management Studies (2009–2014): A Content Analysis of Journal Articles

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to investigate the adoption and utilisation of mixed methods research (MMR) in an emerging field, such as knowledge management (KM). Methodologies used by researchers have a bearing on the reliability and validity of the knowledge they produce. There is need to explore the prevalence in use of various methodologies over time. Such studies provide researchers time to reflect on their research practices. It is important to reflect on how researchers are adopting and utilising MMR a… Show more

“…When a firm absorbs new knowledge, it can promote better adaptations to market conditions (Teixeira et al, 2020), which is considered an essential capability in the current business environment. Third, this study fills in the gap in the knowledge management research field, where there are limited studies using mixed methods research (Ngulube, 2020). Finally, the research model is assessed in the context of a large automaker with a worldwide presence and a vast set of strategic suppliers.…”

“…The rationale for the choice of the exploratory sequential MMR design was for the scholars to generate a comprehensive, diverse and balanced picture, from different viewpoints and theoretical lenses, regarding the complex issue of corporate tacit knowledge loss in particular South African public sector enterprises. Ngulube (2020) and Creswell and Creswell (2018) contend that MMR is most appropriate for exploring complex research phenomena from different standpoints because of its ability to present complementarity, completeness, mixture in the data gathering and analysis procedures. Phaladi (2022a) and Ngulube (2019) also call for the use of MMR in the KM field in order for KM scholars to take a methodological turn and adopt a variety of research approaches including MMR.…”
