Missed nursing care, staffing levels, job satisfaction, and intent to leave among Jordanian nurses

Abstract: Patient safety is an important outcome for nurses who provide patient care within an environment that may increase the incidence of errors or impose them to omit care; these errors mostly happen because of staff shortage. The purpose of this study is to identify the types and reasons of "missed nursing care" among Jordanian nurses, and to examine the relationships between "missed nursing care", staffing, intent to leave, and job satisfaction. A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. A convenience sample … Show more

“…These standards determine the number of patients. When compared with international studies, patient-to-nurse ratio in Thai university hospitals is similar to those in hospitals in nine European countries (Ball et al, 2018) and Jordan (Al-Faouri et al, 2020), but less than those in other settings such as South Korea (Cho et al, 2020).…”

“…Among those factors, nurse staffing and work environment have been explicitly identified as contributing factors to missed care. Empirical evidence documents that poor nurse staffing, staffing and resource inadequacy (Lee & Kalisch, 2021; Park et al, 2018; Smith et al, 2018) and higher patient‐to‐nurse ratio (Al‐Faouri et al, 2020; Griffiths et al, 2018; Lee & Kalisch, 2021) are associated with increased missed care. A recent longitudinal study by Lake et al (2020) found that, with improved work environments and nurse staffing, the prevalence and frequency of missed care decreased significantly.…”

“…On the other hand, ITL is also crucial because it contributes to nurses' shortage, the global problem (Burmeister et al, 2019) and because it is related to poor nursing care and job satisfaction (Al-Faouri et al, 2020). With the ongoing outbreak of the novel coronavirus and the associated work stressors (Khatatbeh, Khasawneh, et al, 2021), increased attention has been paid to nurses' QOL and ITL (Alrawashdeh et al, 2021).…”

“…So, nurses' QOL reflects their well-being and affects their productivity. ITL means having or making a plan to quit the job (Al-Faouri et al, 2020;Andresen et al, 2017).…”

“…Pre-review, we identified two recently published systematic reviews on missed nursing care that do not report any findings from low-middle income countries (LMICs) 1 , 2 . We also identified a few recent studies that investigated missed nursing care in LMIC contexts 9 11 . Generally, LMIC settings have distinctively different hospital structures, practice environments and organisational contexts from HICs and also have limited resources including staff and technology.…”
