Mismatches in the Ecosystem Services Literature—a Review of Spatial, Temporal, and Functional-Conceptual Mismatches

Abstract: Purpose of Review The objective of this review is to identify commonly researched ecosystem service mismatches, including mismatches concerning management and policies implemented to manage ecosystem service delivery. It additionally discusses how mismatches affect the ability to develop effective policies and management guidelines for ecosystem services. Recent Findings Recent ecosystem service literature considers mismatches in the ecosystem, the social … Show more

“…Third, these material and nonmaterial ecosystem benefits are valued differently depending on specific crisis contexts and as such vary temporally (Winkler et al., 2021). Meaning that some benefits are only valued at certain times and usually ignored at other times.…”

“…There are numerous examples of mismatches in the literature [52]. Most species have evolved as niche constructors [53] creating a constant environment through their activities and behaviors, all leading to a situation of equilibrium. Modern humans, on the other hand, constantly change their environment, rather than creating balance, they live in the constant instability that they themselves produce.…”

“…It is important to distinguish short-term interruptions due to shocks (e.g., bad weather or an IT malfunction interrupting just-in-time fresh grocery deliveries) from disruptions due to stresses that affect the longer term (e.g., changing dietary preferences, shifting cropping regions). It is also important to understand the interactions between the two and the notion of temporal mismatches (89). In the context of dynamically shifting risk environments, strategies to enhance resilience over a shorter timescale may deplete resilience over the longer term, necessitating specification of the time frame over which resilience is being considered (90).…”
