Miniaturized ionophore-based potentiometric sensors for the flow-injection determination of metformin in pharmaceutical formulations and biological fluids

Abstract: Miniaturized potentiometric sensors based on β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) are described for determination of metformin (Mf) in pharmaceutical preparations and biological fluids. Electrode matrix compositions are optimized on the basis of the nature and content of sensing ionophore, ionic sites and plasticizers. Coated wire electrodes (CWEs) modified with heptakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-β-CD, sodium tetrakis(4-fluorophenyl)borate (NaTFPB) and 2-fluorophenyl 2-nitrophenyl ether (f-NPE), work satisfactorily in the concen… Show more

“…Moreover, nanomaterials enhance of the hydrophobicity of the sensing membrane, which reflected to the more stable potential reading [51]. The present sensor showed high potential stability and need only for 20 min to achieve steady potential compared with 2 h for coated graphite electrodes and 24h for the corresponding PVC and carbon paste electrodes [52,53].…”

“…The result cocktail was printed on the surface of the graphite/PVC conducting track and left to dry at 50 o C for 24 h. The fabricated electrodes were used in potentiometric measurements after preconditioning in 10 ‐3 mol L ‐1 BP solutions for 10 min. For comparison, the above electrode matrix was applied for coating of graphite road following procedures described elsewhere .…”

“…The major analytical techniques used in metformin analysis include NMR [20], HPLC [21], GC [22], PVC matrix membrane sensors [23], UV-Vis [24], capillary electrophoresis [25], potentiometric titrations etc.24 However, many of these methods are only used in human biological samples and in pharmaceutical for purity determination and many of them are either time consuming or very expensive to run large samples [19].…”
