Mini-haptics to improve capsular fixation of plate-haptic silicone intraocular lenses

Abstract: Lens epithelial cell proliferation around the mini-haptics significantly improved capsular bag fixation of the plate-haptic silicone IOL. This should decrease the incidence of clinical decentration and dislocation.

“…24 Polyimide loops added to silicone haptics increase the stability of an IOL in the capsular bag. 25 This might explain why we found less rotation of the Trulign toric IOL than that reported for other toric IOL models. Furthermore, the size of the IOL relative to the capsular bag diameter is important for stability because a shorter length might allow more rotation before the capsular bag shrinks.…”

“…14 Simply increasing the size of a plate haptic is not a solution as this can cause distortion of the capsular bag and zonules 15 and a reliable relationship between the capsular bag and ocular biometry has not been established. 16 Kent et al 17 demonstrated, in animal eyes, that the addition of mini polyimide haptics to a plate haptic significantly improved capsular bag fixation. These findings were supported by a large in-vivo study involving a presbyopia correcting IOL with mini polyimide haptics (Trulign toric) which exhibited high levels of rotational stability.…”
