Mineral composition of Allium cepa L. leaves of southern subspecies

Abstract: The mineral composition of Allium cepa L. leaves was measured by using the scanning electron microscope of Japanese company JEOL, model JSM600LA with EDS system. 11collection samples of FRC “All-Russian Institute of Plants Genetic Resources named after N. I. Vavilov” and 4 samples of FSBSI “Research Institute of Agriculture of the Crimea” were studied. 12 main elements (in mass., %) contained in onion leaves were evaluated. The samples with the maximum macro- and micronutrient elements accumulation in the leav… Show more

“…The green onion leaves are an excellent source of mineral elements that enter the human body as ions in balanced concentrations. In onion leaves, the contents of the mineral elements follow the order of Zn > Fe > Si > Na > Р > Cl > Mo > Mg > S > Ca > Cu > K (Nemtinov et al, 2020(Nemtinov et al, , 2021.…”

“…Molecular indicators of water stress speeded accumulation of active forms of oxygen that leads to the development of oxidative stress, the change of chlorophyll structure, decrease in photosynthetic pigments and metabolites, and the plant cells damage (Hernandez et al, 2001;Munne-Bosch et al, 2013;Getko et al, 2019). Mineral elements are not only structural components, but also play an important role in the enzyme activity, osmotic pressure control for cell turgor and growth, and acid-base and water-salt metabolism (White and Brown, 2010;Nemtinov et al, 2020). Increased stability to drought stress mostly depends on the plant's mineral accumulation (Waraich et al, 2011;Khan et al, 2012).…”

“…In plant life, the mineral elements are very important and play a vital role in their resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, growth, and development (Popov and Dementyev, 2014). The most important macronutrients include nitrogen-N, phosphorus-P, sulfur-S, potassium-K, calcium-Ca, and magnesium-Mg, while the micronutrients are iron-Fe, copper-Cu, chlorine-Cl, nickel-Ni, molybdenum-Mo, zinc-Zn, manganese-Mn, and boron-B (White and Brown, 2010;Nemtinov et al, 2020). Micronutrients are also involved in physiological, biochemical, and metabolic processes that occur under different abiotic stresses.…”

“…These metabolites enlarge enzymic antioxidant system and possess essential potential to decrease and prevent the cell damage [6]. Mineral elements are not only used as structural components, but also play an important role in the enzymes activity, osmotic pressure control for the cells' turgor and growth, take part in acid-base and water-salt metabolism [7][8][9]. Increased stability to drought mostly depends on the mineral composition of the plants [10,11].…”
