Mind the “academician-practitioner” gap: an experience-based model in the food and beverage sector

Abstract: Purpose – This purpose of this paper is to introduce a research model inspired by the basic principles\ud of experiential research and apply it to the food and beverage industry. Thinkers and doers often do not\ud speak the same language: many scholars have pursued the goal of reducing the gap between\ud academicians and practitioners by introducing new research models or adapting existing ones. Two\ud case studies with wine and olive oil producers illustrate how the model works and highlight its\ud applicabil… Show more

“…This was possible also thanks to the quality of the relationships between researchers and stakeholders: trustworthiness, mutuality and commitment are the ground on which the partnerships involving the UNIMC’s research team has been developed since 2009. Most of the projects are characterised by the presence of a reciprocal flow of communication which led to shared visions, facilitating establishing shared goals and giving clear roles and tasks to each partner (Cavicchi et al 2014 ; Brookman-Frazee et al 2012 ; Drahota et al 2016 ).…”

“…The case study protocol used is based on Yin (2009), Stake (1995) and Tellis (1997): during the initial phases of the research design an action research approach was adopted (Santini and Cavicchi, 2014). An action research approach aims to reduce the gap between theory and practice and facilitate knowledge dissemination, by stimulating flexibility and responsiveness in research through critical reflection (Cavicchi et al, 2014; IJSHE 19,1 Dick, 2002). A case study methodology has been selected because it was necessary to understand social complex phenomena, and this method allows investigators "to retain the holistic and meaningful characteristics of real-life events" (Yin, 2009, p. 4).…”

“…While academics publish research for their peers, they also have an interest in informing practitioners in the field (Cavicchi et al, 2014). Studies in marketing and advertising often include a section detailing practical implications of a study.…”
