We examined mainland Chinese immigrants' economic integration by looking at the earnings gap between locals and immigrants (both permanent and newly arrived) during and after the period of the Hong Kong handover from 1991 to 2016. During this period, Hong Kong experienced a further process of deindustrialization and an increased connection with mainland China. Using 5% Hong Kong population census/by-census data (1991-2016), we found that although mainland Chinese immigrants with college or above education still earned less than their local counterparts throughout the years, the income gap rapidly narrowed and their income levels converged in the more recent period. Meanwhile, the gap for those with high school degrees or below only slightly narrowed over time.Moreover, for those with high school degrees or below, the income gap between the permanent immigrants and the newly arrived ones remained constant over time, while a converging trend was observed among those with college or above degrees. Our findings suggest that immigrant economic integration may be accelerated when the socioeconomic linkage is closer between the origins and destination of migration, although some groups may benefit more than others.

Abstract. Migrant domestic workers in Singapore are situated in a highly hierarchical environment, requiring them to live and work in the same place. This spatial situation leads to a lack of space and time for the female workers which challenges their psychosocial well-being. We ask how the women, nevertheless, develop psychosocial well-being, based on their recognition and subjective embodied positioning, analytically grasped through the concept of ontological (in)security. Based on qualitative interviews, we show how the workers perceive and produce ontological (in)security through spatial dimensions of visibility and belonging. These dimensions are subjectively embodied in multiple places and networks. On behalf of multiple visibilities and belongings outside the domestic realm, domestic care workers in Singapore are able to actively produce ontological security and strengthen their psychosocial well-being. The results show the relevance of implementing regulations for the women to have more possibilities in choosing their whereabouts.

Immigrant and migrant well‐being have been widely studied, but the knowledge gained from immigrant adaptation and well‐being has mostly focused on findings from more developed countries, which may diverge from the situation in Asia. East‐Asian countries have strong roots in Confucian culture, which celebrates cultural homogeneity, and societies are thus conservative when it comes to welcoming immigrants. Southeast Asian countries are major migrant‐sending areas but have now also become important manufacturing centers with dynamic migrant and immigrant groups. In this special issue, we seek to push forward knowledge about the myth of immigrant and migrant adaptation and well‐being among both Asian areas and Asian immigrants in North America. In this introductory article, we first discuss a few gaps in research on migration and immigration in Asia, including migration of the same ethnicity group across different political systems in the Asian context, migration and its influence on family and well‐being between and among Southeast Asian countries, as well as Asian immigrants in North America. We then introduce the various contributions to this special issue. We conclude with a discussion of policy implications.
