Microwave Irradiation: Alternative Heating Process for the Synthesis of Biologically Applicable Chromones, Quinolones, and Their Precursors

Abstract: Microwave irradiation has become a popular heating technique in organic synthesis, mainly due to its short reaction times, solventless reactions, and, sometimes, higher yields. Additionally, microwave irradiation lowers energy consumption and, consequently, is ideal for optimization processes. Moreover, there is evidence that microwave irradiation can improve the regioselectivity and stereoselectivity aspects of vital importance in synthesizing bioactive compounds. These crucial features of microwave irradiati… Show more

“…Accordingly, establishing safety levels by standardizing the frequency, power, and exposure times of microwaves, along with their applications, is of the upmost importance. Some studies have reported that microwaves may affect our CNSs differently, with some indicating that microwaves are involved in the manifestation of CNS diseases [ 108 ], including Alzheimer’s disease [ 109 , 202 , 203 , 204 , 205 , 206 ]. ( Figure 6 ).…”

“…The microwave‐assisted synthesis is an important tool in organic chemistry, being extensively employed in the last decades [43] . The use of microwave irradiation has many advantages compared to the conventional heating method, such as the facility to achieve and control high temperatures and high energy efficiency, which implies on the possibility of performing organic reactions in shorter reaction times [44] …”

“…According to the previously described significant advantages of microwave-assisted heating in medicinal chemistry, Albuquerque et al 152 introduced another fascinating aspect in their review, where they reported on the ability of microwave irradiation to improve a reaction in terms of regioselectivity and stereoselectivity. For instance, they mentioned the synthesis of (E)-3-styrylflavones (e.g., compound 115) (Fig.…”
