“…The majority of the researches on the arachnoid membranes and the cisterns were performed by anatomists and radiologists including Gerardus Blasius, Frederick Ruysch, Axel Key, Gustaf Retzius, Liliequist, Epstein, and others (Liliequist, 1956;Epstein, 1965;Lewtas and Jefferson, 1966;Bakay, 1991;Sanan and van Loveren, 1999). Since 1976 when Yasargil established the concept of performing intracranial operations by moving from one cistern to another, the anatomy of the cisterns has been studied by several neurosurgeons including Yasargil (1976Yasargil ( , 1984, Rhoton (2000), and Dujovny (Vinas et al, 1994(Vinas et al, , 1996a. It has become the principle of the microneurosurgery to open the subarachnoid cisterns in an orderly manner so as to gain a natural pathway through which most operations can be performed noninvasively.…”
