Maraging steels are ferrous alloys with Ni, Co, Mo, and Ti additions. These materials are a special class of ultra high mechanical strength steels with wide and special applications in strategic areas, which makes their knowledge very valuable. Computational advances allowed to analyze the behavior of these materials numerically, using the finite element method and developing mathematical models that can represent numerically its mechanical behavior. The present work has the objective of surveying the mechanical properties of maraging steels 300 and 350 by slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) tests, after the solution treatment at 1183K for 1h. Additionally, it was evaluated the hydrogen embrittlement in samples tested by SSRT under cathodic protection with a potential -1.2 VSCE in 3.5% NaCl solution.The study was complemented with detailed fractographic analysis. This work also presents the analysis of representative models by use of Hollomon, Swift, Voce and coupled Swift-Voce equations to describe the strain-hardening behavior. Compared to the others, the Voce's model was the one which best fitted the experimental results, with values of R 2 higher than 0.992. Through the variation of the chemical composition found in the different grades of maraging steels, this work contemplates the creation of a generalized Voce model based on the variation of the Ti content. The work concludes presenting the generalized Voce model proposed and a numerical analysis of the SSRT results with a good accuracy of the strain-hardening response.

Maraging steels are among the highest strength steels commercially available. Despite being relatively rare and expensive, they may present a yield strength around 3 GPa and are indispensable for various applications. In the present paper, several aspects will be reviewed related to maraging steels including a brief history of its development, microstructure and acting hardening mechanisms, loss of toughness with the tensile strength increase, resistance to oxidation, and corrosion, nitriding behavior, and future perspectives.

Determining Johnson-Cook Constitutive Equation for Low-Carbon Steel via Taylor Anvil Test

Tristal steel is low-carbon construction-type steel widely used in the automotive industry, e.g., for braking components. Given the contemporary demands on the high-volume production of such components, these are typically fabricated using automatic sequential machines, which can produce components at strain rates up to 103 s−1. For this reason, characterising the behaviour of the used material at high strain rates is of the utmost importance for successful industrial production. This study focuses on the characterisation of the behaviour of low-carbon steel via developing its material model using the Johnson-Cook constitutive equation. At first, the Taylor anvil test is performed. Subsequently, the acquired data together with the results of observations of structures and properties of the tested specimens are used to fill the necessary parameters into the equation. Finally, the developed equation is used to numerically simulate the Taylor anvil test and the predicted data is correlated with the experimentally acquired one. The results showed a satisfactory correlation of the experimental and predicted data; the deformed specimen region featured increased occurrence of dislocations, as well as higher hardness (its original value of 88 HV increased to more than 200 HV after testing), which corresponded to the predicted distributions of effective imposed strain and compressive stress.
