Microstructural, Surface Topology and Nanomechanical Characterization of Electrodeposited Ni-P/SiC Nanocomposite Coatings

Abstract: In the present study, nickel phosphorous alloys (Ni-P) and Ni-P/ silicon carbide (SiC) nanocomposite coatings were deposited by electrodeposition on steel substrates in order for their microstructural properties to be assessed while using SEM, XRD, and three-dimensional (3D) profilometry as well as nanoindentation. The amorphisation of the as-plated coatings was observed in all cases, whereas subsequent heat treatment induced crystallization and Ni3P intermetallic phase precipitation. Examination of the surfac… Show more

“…The nanoindentation experiments have been computationally generated considering the simulation of the loading stage of the indenter penetrating into the SCB‐PE specimens. Other work 53,54 has shown that kinematic hardening leads to a rapid convergence in the corresponding FEA calculations, so this method was utilized in the developed curve fitting procedure.…”

“…where, P max is the maximum load applied to the material, h max maximum depth penetration, and (A) is measured as the maximum measured contact between the indenter and specimen. For Berkovich indenter, A surface contact is expressed as a function of connection between specimen and indentation depth hf as shown in equation ( 2) [45][46][47] A ¼ 3 Then h f contact with the material can be expressed using equation (3) as…”
