Microservice architecture style has been gaining wide impetus in the software engineering industry. Researchers and practitioners have adopted the microservices concepts into several application domains such as the internet of things, cloud computing, service computing, and healthcare. Applications developed in alignment with the microservices principles require an underlying platform with management capabilities to coordinate the different microservice units and ensure that the application functionalities are delivered to the user. A multitude of approaches has been proposed for the various tasks in microservices-based systems. However, since the field is relatively young, there is a need to organize the different research works. In this study, we present a comprehensive review of the research approaches directed toward microservice architectures and propose a multilevel taxonomy to categorize the existing research. The study also discusses the different distributed computing paradigms employing microservices and identifies the open research challenges in the domain.

Microservice-based software architecture design has been widely discussed, and best practices have been published as architecture design patterns. However, conformance to those patterns is hard to ensure and assess automatically, leading to problems such as architectural drift and erosion, especially in the context of continued software evolution or large-scale microservice systems. In addition, not much in the component and connector architecture models is specific (only) to the microservices approach, whereas other aspects really specific to that approach, such as independent deployment of microservices, are usually modeled in other views or not at all. We suggest a set of constraints to check and metrics to assess architecture conformance to microservice patterns. In comparison to expert judgment derived from the patterns, a subset of these constraints and metrics shows a good relative performance and potential for automation.

Nowadays, the IT service environment develops in a dynamic, rapid, and unpredictable way. Microservices and application containers in this process have a significant impact on new generation IT service models. The fact that they have important capabilities such as modelability, presentability as service, and restructurability, are reasons for preferring them in many areas. Moreover, microservices can meet various needs of IT personnel. As it is known, all server system components, such as CPU, network, hard-drive I/O, affect energy consumption. At this point, microservices also play an important mediator role in resource management. Energy consumption of microservice-based applications is lower than that of the traditional approaches. However, there are still cases of recoverable and unnecessary consumption at some points. Microservices can be monitored and controlled using many methods. Thus, this provides us with opportunities to recover the wasted energy resources considerably. In this article, the effects of container-based microservice architectures on the energy consumption of the system and how to reduce these effects are presented. For this purpose, a methodology, which has 3 approaches (disconnect, pause, stop), and a tracing mechanism are proposed. The results show that this methodology has a considerable effect on energy efficiency.
