Microphase-contrast x-ray computed tomography for basic biomedical study at SPring-8

Abstract: Micro-phase-contrast X-ray computed tomography with an X-ray interferometer (micro-phase-contrast CT) is in operation to obtain high spatial resolution images of less than 0.01 mm at the undulator beam-line 20XU of SPring-8, Japan, and we applied micro-phase-contrast CT to observe the organs of rats and hamsters. The excised kidney and spleen fixed by formalin were imaged. The fine inner-structures such as vessels, glomeruli of kidney and white and red pulps of spleen were visualized clearly about 0.01-mm spat… Show more

“…Li Gang [14] used the best simplest two crystals to investigate the relation between the kidney slices thickness and imaging quality. Wu T [15] obtained rat kidney slices imaging as high resolution of 0.01 mm with an X-ray interferometer. Yoon [16] imaged the normal kidney and carcinoma tissue, he found the images with clear edge enhancement revealed clearly microstructure in thick kidney tissue (more than 700-fold thicker than microscopic images).…”

“…A few examples are mentioned here in closing the subsection, including damage in composites 143,144 and structures in biological specimens. 126,145 Real time phase radiography of insect respiration produced interesting new insights, 130 and phase microCT, providing the third dimension, will undoubtedly prove very valuable.…”

“…24,25 Using the X-ray phase-contrast microtomography system with this crystal X-ray interferometer (phase-contrast microtomography), we depicted the microstructure of kidney and spleen of rat earlier. 25,26 The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of phase-contrast microtomography for visualizing microstructures, and to analyze quantitatively the density alteration of microstructures in the kidney of APA hamsters.…”
