Microfluidic chips for chirality exploration

Abstract: Microfluidic chips applied to the investigation of chirality allow reaction, separation and analysis of minuscule amounts of enantiomeric molecules. Chiral chip technology is employed in fields as diverse as pharmaceutical high throughput screening and deep space exploration missions.

“…After we could prove the performance and the stability of the PEG-coated chips, we investigated their application to improve chiral separations in MCE [47][48][49]. As test compounds we chose FITC-labelled amino acid enantiomers using b-cyclodextrin (b-CD) as chiral selector.…”

“…High space-time yields, high selectivity, and complete conversion are key goals in process intensification and resource efficiency. Microreactors are also of interest for rapid process development if PAT matches the reaction timescale [79,80]. Real-time product analysis is key for quality by design (QbD) of the manufacturing process.…”

“…They offer good peak capacity and sensitivity, low sample handling, minute sample requirements and are portable, giving the opportunity to perform field analysis. Mostly, microdevices are used for electrophoretic analysis, since the conditions to realize this kind of separations (liquid media, application of a voltage) are easy to realize for such small devices . However, the introduction of monolithic materials has given a new impetus to the preparation of microdevices for chromatographic purposes.…”
