Malassezia pachydermatis is a commensal yeast of the skin and external ear canal of dogs and cats that may become an opportunistic pathogen under some conditions. The aim of this paper was to research the diseases which predispose to the development of opportunistic M. pachydermatis in dogs with external otitis or dermatopathies. The samples were collected by sterile swabs or by the carpet technique. Samples were obtained from the external ear canal and cutaneous tegument and were seeded in Sabouraud dextrose agar added with chloramphenicol and cycloheximide. Following, they were incubated at 32ºC for seven days for yeast identification. M. pachydermatis isolation was successful in 49 (70%) of the 70 samples investigated. Underlying diseases diagnosed in these animals included ceruminous otitis, skin fold pyoderma, seborrhoeic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, pressure point pyoderma, parasitic otitis, acanthosis nigricans, hot spot and bacterial otitis. The results confirm that the presence of this yeast can cause the perpetuation of these diseases and be a treatment complication factor.

“…Observou-se ainda que o estabelecimento da microbiota do pavilhão auricular nos ϐilhotes iniciou-se no período neonatal, em decorrência, provavelmente, do contato com as mucosas da progenitora e do ambiente externo. Casos similares foram registrados em pequenos animais domés-ticos, em que o estabelecimento da microbiota residente do ouvido externo, não apresentou variações na distribuição dos microrganismos quanto a idade e sexo, sendo formada basicamente por cocos Gram-positivos e bastonetes Gram--positivos (Langoni et al 1991, Amaral et al 1998, Bonates, 2003. Bras. 32(9):927-930, setembro 2012 927 RESUMO.-O presente trabalho teve por objetivo identiϐi-car as principais bactérias aeróbias que compõem a microbiota natural do pavilhão auricular de cutias hígidas. Para tanto, foram utilizadas 48 cutias, criadas em cativeiro sob as condições Semiáridas do Nordeste Brasileiro. Esses animais foram distribuídos nas categorias de adultos (N=32) e ϐilhotes (N=16), e, em ambas, distribuídos igualmente entre machos e fêmeas. Através de um swab, em cada animal coletou-se de cada orelha a secreção presente na superϐície do pavilhão auricular dos animais, totalizando 96 amostras. Este material foi refrigerado, e encaminhado ao laboratório para a realização das análises microbiológicas The aim of this study was to identify the aerobic bacteria of the auricular natural microbiota from healthy agoutis (Dasyprocta aguti Linnaeus, 1758). In the total, 48 agoutis were used in this experiment, being 32 adults and 16 puppies (both groups divided into equal parts between males and females). The animals were raised under captive conditions, in the Brazilian Semiarid. From each animal, a sample of auricular secretion was collected from each auricular pinna and processed for microbiological analyses. Em contrapartida, a fauna silvestre representa importante fonte protéica para a alimentação humana, além de proporcionar produtos como pele, couro e pêlos, apresentando grande potencial de mercado e podendo resultar em vantagens econômicas e sociais (Lopes et al. 2004). Adicionalmente, a criação de animais silvestres em cativeiro desponta como forma indireta e importante para se conservar espécies ameaçadas de extinção. Diante destes fatos, cresce o interesse da sociedade em estudar tais espécies, pela possibilidade de aproveitá-las quer seja no aproveitamento direto desta fonte de alimento ou mesmo na geração de renda, através da comercialização de produtos que apresentam grande potencial de mercado (Mendonça et al. 2006). BackgroundMicroorganisms living in the oral cavity play an important role in health and disease of the host. Cats are susceptible to oral infections, and it is documented that fungi in the oral cavity could impact these infections. Antifungal resistance has been increasing in recent years.ObjectivesThis study was designed to identify yeast isolates from the oral cavity of healthy cats and to evaluate their antifungal susceptibility pattern.MethodsOral specimens were collected from 60 cats and cultured at 37°C for 10 days. Yeasts were isolated and identified. Their antifungal susceptibility pattern was determined according to CLSI M44‐A.ResultsThree yeast genera were isolated, including Candida spp (55.5%), Rhodotorula spp (33.3%) and Hanseniaspora spp (11.1%). Antifungal susceptibility profiling showed that, apart from a dose‐dependent effect of itraconazole, Hanseniaspora spp was susceptible to all seven drugs studied. The Candida species were susceptible to all drugs except ketoconazole (sensitivity 80%) and caspofungin (sensitivity 40%). In R. glutinis and R. minuta, 100% sensitivity was observed for amphotericin B, posaconazole, ketoconazole and voriconazole.ConclusionsThe results suggest that, in comparison with humans and other animals, cats have a different oral mycoflora in terms of species, number and diversity. However, these isolates have similar susceptibility patterns to those seen in isolates from other animals and humans. More studies should be done to further characterize the oral mycobiota of cats and its role in oral infections.
