Microbial Assay of Otamiri River and Its Sediments in Parts of Owerri

Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyse and identify microbial constituents in the water and sediment samples with comparison of the River to World Health Organisation (WHO, 2011) standard for drinking water and Federal Ministry of Environment (FME, 2006) and their public health implications with respect to water quality. The microbial assay of Otamiri River was investigated using Standard plate count. The result indicates that microbial constituents of Otamiri river obtained at five strategic gauge stations desig… Show more

“…In the sediment however, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella,, Acinetobacter seifertii, Bacillus and Escherichia coli were isolated. These isolates have been reported by previous authors that have worked in the river and its sediment [63][64][65]. Among the isolates from the river, Serratia marcescens (SerEW01) recorded the highest percentage occurrence of 33.33%, followed by Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species (22.2%).…”

“…It lies within the latitude 5 o 18' 00'' to 5 o 30' 00'' N and longitude of 6 o 50' to 7 o 10' 00'' E. The Otanmiri River has a source from Owerri timber and runs from Egbu where it confluences with Nworie River. It moves down through Nekede to Ozuzu in Etche town of Rivers State where it combines with the Imo River and flows to the south into the Atlantic Ocean [40]. The geology of the area shows that the Benin Formation (which is an extensive stratigraphic unit in the Southern Nigeria) underlies it.…”

“…The geology of the area shows that the Benin Formation (which is an extensive stratigraphic unit in the Southern Nigeria) underlies it. According to Fagorite et al [40], the thickness of the Benin Formation is variable. On land, the Benin Formation is covered by the Oligocene-Miocene, Ogwashi-Asaba Formation while the Petroleum bearing Agbada and Akata formation covers the subsurface layers [40,41].…”

“…Water pollution is a major challenge facing developing countries such as Nigeria [2][3][4][5]. Water pollution occurs when unwanted materials with potentials to threaten human and other natural systems find their ways into rivers, lakes, wells, streams, boreholes or even reserved fresh water in homes and industries [6]. There are numerous scientific and economic evidence such as industrial production, recreational activities that water pollution can cause severe decrease in productivity and deaths of living species and subsequent alteration of ecosystem services [7][8][9][10][11].…”
