Micro-spectroscopy of HKUST-1 metal–organic framework crystals loaded with tetracyanoquinodimethane: effects of water on host–guest chemistry and electrical conductivity

Abstract: Guest@MOF materials have potential in next-generation materials for electroconductive devices. Micro-spectroscopy studies of TCNQ@HKUST-1 electroconductive composites revealed the effects of spatial distribution and water vapor on this material.

“…Further, in another study, a combination of Raman microscopy with advanced data analysis shed light on the distribution of a guest molecule (7,7,8,8tetracyanoquinodimethane) at the intracrystal level. 433 These two studies show the importance of using spatially resolved tools as a routine when complex composites are built as reported in the latest strategies. Eventually, the use of these, together with more traditional bulk techniques in operando modes will result in an improved design of MOFs, rendering them suitable for large-scale or commercial applications (Fig.…”

“…Nevertheless, a number of high-resolution studies in which pore structures or polymorph transformations were visualized by means of aberration-corrected (AC)-TEM, have been published. [429][430][431][432][433] Besides spatially resolved characterization, MOFs may be used as platforms for developing other advanced spectroscopic techniques.…”

“…Multiple exposures were carried out to ensure that sample damage was not observed. Data processing was performed with Wire 3.4 of the TXM Wizard software package [53] and Matlab R2015a [56] by generating signal-to-baseline maps of the spectral regions described in the main text (cosmic ray signals and artefacts were manually subtracted). PXRD patterns were obtained by using aB ruker-AXS D2 Phaser powder X-ray diffractometero perated at 30 kV in Bragg-Brentano geometry using Co Ka1,2 radiation (l = 1.79026 ).…”

“…As evidence, HKUST-1 has various morphologies due to different synthesis conditions, such as octahedrons [14], cubes [13], cuboctahedrons [40], hexagonal polyhedrons [23], rod-like shapes [21], irregular-layered sheets [43], agglomerates [11], or even monoliths [12]. This uncertain morphology can be overcome by the coordination modulation method using additional modulators or chemicals to maintain crystal growth of HKUST-1, such as acetic acid [44,45], nitric acid [46,47], sodium bicarbonate [13,48], sodium acetate, sodium formate, and triethylamine [49]. Further than this, a statistical optimization of the HKUST-1 synthesis process needs to be studied to overcome the diversity of synthesis conditions so that the optimum HKUST-1 can be generated and further utilized.…”
