Micro- and Macroelements Content of Plants Used for Landfill Leachate Treatment Based on Phragmites australis and Ceratophyllum demersum

Abstract: One of the key problems associated with the functioning of landfills is the generation of leachate. In order to reduce their negative impact on the environment, various treatment technologies are applied. Among them, solutions based on the use of phytotechnology deserve special attention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of landfill leachate on the content of micro- and macroelements in plant material. The research was carried out in four municipal waste landfills located in Poland. Emergent ma… Show more

“…High nitrogen content is common in landfill leachate. Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for plants, but its levels that are too high can disrupt the dynamic balance of antioxidant mechanisms, causing the accumulation of reactive oxygen in plant cells (59). The content of nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, and potassium in leachate makes it possible to utilize and process landfill leachate as an organic fertilizer instead of commercial liquid fertilizer.…”

“…The accumulation of heavy metals in soil has become a serious problem, particularly in developing countries (Adimalla & Wang, 2018). Heavy metal pollution poses a serious threat to human health because of the high toxicity, environmental mobility, accumulation in the food chain, and lack of biodegradability of heavy metals (Fei et al, 2022; Szymańska‐Pulikowska et al, 2023; Wdowczyk & Szymańska‐Pulikowska, 2022). In addition, heavy metals persist long term in soil environment and can adversely affect soil fauna and flora through soil–microbial interactions and microbial processes (Kumar et al, 2019; Zhao et al, 2022).…”

“…As for the other method of combating this plant, it is biological control, which means using a living organism, or pest within controlled limits in a way that keeps its growth within limits without, economic harm against this aquatic plant. Chemical control has also been used with chemical pesticides, which is considered one of the most common methods in the world in eliminating water jungles [6,7,8]. In our current study, the most widely used and famous paraquat herbicide in the world and in Iraq was selected.…”
