Metropolitan Residents’ Preferences and Willingness to Pay for a Life Zone Forest for Mitigating Heat Island Effects during Summer Season in Korea

Abstract: Abstract:Coupled with green house effects, the urban heat island is occurring more frequently, and thus is becoming a serious social problem. In order to elicit policy implications, the current study assesses the economic values on the heat island-mitigating functions of urban forest through choice experiments. The analytical results suggest that metropolitan city residents' utility can be increased by raising the size of life zone forests which is comprised of street trees, parks in residential regions, and s… Show more

“…As a type of stated preference method for estimating the monetary value, many researchers choose the CE to analyze consumers' WTP, along with CVM and experimental auctions (EA) [32,33]. Based on the random utility model, CE is based on the behavior of choosing the best alternative to maximize their utility.…”

“…Choice Experiment (CE) was one of the stated preference methods for evaluating the monetary value. It is most commonly used to analyze consumer's willingness to pay, along with contingent valuation and experimental auctions [25,26]. CE is based on the random utility model, which combines the attributes of a certain product to create a hypothetical product and to analyze consumer choices.…”

“…Several studies examine the willingness-to-pay (WTP) for ecosystem services, such as climate change mitigation [18], reduction of the urban heat island effect [19], sustainable drainage of stormwater in cities [20], environmental benefits [21], and energy efficiency [22]. Others focus on sustainable solutions [14,[23][24][25][26][27].…”
