Methodology for spatialization of intense rainfall equation parameters

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to generate maps of intense rainfall equation parameters using interpolated maximum intense rainfall data. The study area comprised Espírito Santo State, Brazil. A total of 59 intense rainfall equations were used to interpolate maximum intense rainfall, with a 1 x 1 km spatial resolution. Maximum intense rainfall was interpolated considering recurrence of 2; 5; 10; 20; 50 and 100 years, and duration of 10; 20; 30; 40; 50; 60; 120; 240; 360; 420; 660; 720; 900; 1,140; 1,380 a… Show more

“…Almeida (2017) [40], applying such methodology, with the same rainfall database used in this study, obtained mean MAPE values below 10%. Similar values were found in the same study for Espírito Santo [50,51] and Rio de Janeiro States [39]. For the Espírito Santo, [50,51] observed mean MAPE values below 14%.…”

“…Similar values were found in the same study for Espírito Santo [50,51] and Rio de Janeiro States [39]. For the Espírito Santo, [50,51] observed mean MAPE values below 14%. All the cited researches, therefore, showed lower MAPE than those obtained in the present study.…”

“…Silveira (2016) used the IDF equation to determine the hietogram of the Chicago method. Several methodologies have been developed for designing terraces and soil conservation works where the runoff is calculated using the IDF equations (Griebeler et al, 2005;Fietz et al, 2011;Miranda et al, 2012;Xavier et al, 2014). The use of the IDF equation is also frequent in software or spreadsheets for designing urban drainage structures.…”

“…For hydraulic structure design, a rainfall intensity is always associated with a duration and a certain risk of it being equaled or exceeded, defined by the return period (T). Therefore, it is necessary to know the intensity-duration-frequency relation (IDF) of heavy rain, allowing practical and adequate rainfall data use (Xavier et al, 2014). In Brazil, pioneering studies were developed by Pfafstetter (1957) and Denardin and Freitas (1982), in which were adjusted the IDF relationships of 80 gauging stations distributed throughout the country.…”
