Sub-daily resolution rain gauge data (pluviographic records) should be used to define extreme rainfall intensity-frequency-duration curves. However, there is a lack of these records for many countries, which leads to the application of rainfall disaggregation models that transforms maximum daily rainfall data into sub-daily depths. The agreement between the intensity-duration-frequency curves obtained with disaggregation models and using sub-daily rainfall data is necessary to support the disaggregation method's applicability. The daily rainfall disaggregation method using disaggregation coefficients is the most used in Brazil, despite the lack of performance evaluation. The linear regression and model identity test was used to compare the intensity of rainfall obtained with different methodologies to obtain intensity-duration-frequency curves in 116 rain gauges in Minas Gerais, Brazil. There is a significant difference between the maximum rainfall intensity (im) obtained from pluviographic records and those estimated by the daily rainfall disaggregation. Nevertheless, comparing the im estimated by the daily rainfall disaggregation methods and the im obtained by sub-daily rainfall data, good precision and accuracy are observed, especially using specific HIGHLIGHTS• An alternative method to sub-daily rainfall data for locals with scarce data.• Intensity-duration-frequency curves were fitted by observed and disaggregation data.• Assessment disaggregation coefficients for intensity-duration-frequency curves.• Disaggregated sub-daily rainfall data adequately reproduced the IDF curves.

The objective of this work was to propose an alternative model of IDF equation based on the disaggregation of daily rainfall. Data from the rainfall gauge station code 02649018 of the Brazilian National Water Agency from the period 1968 to 2011 were used. Several extreme event probability distributions were adjusted. Rainfall intensity with a return period of 2 to 100 years and durations of 5 to 1440 minutes were estimated using the relationships between rainfall for different durations. The four coefficients of the traditionally used IDF equation were adjusted, obtaining a sum of squares of deviations equal to 695.1 (mm.h-1)2 and standard error of estimation equal to 2.69 mm.h-1. For the model of the intense rainfall equation proposed, that relates the rain intensity and duration with the maximum daily rainfall, the sum of squares of the deviations was 33.6 (mm.h-1)2 and the standard estimated error was 0.59 mm.h-1. Including the return period in the model, we obtained squares of the deviations of 129.4 (mm.h-1)2, with a standard error of estimation of 1.16 mm.h-1. The models proposed have, besides better estimation accuracy, the advantages of facilitating the updating only by updating the maximum daily precipitation and sub serve the spatial representation.

Heavy rainfall maps in Brazil to 5 year return period

This study created thematic heavy rainfall maps for Brazil, with durations of 5-, 30-, 60- and 120 minutes and 5 years of return period (T). The intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relationships used were compiled from studies found in the literature (798 locations) and derived for 4411 rainfall gauges available in the Hidroweb information system, totaling 5209 rainfall data collected. To derive IDF relationships, Gumbel's probability distributions were used, with parameters estimated by the method of moments. Distribution adequacy was verified by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Rainfall-intensity values obtained by IDF relationships were spatialized in Geographic Information Systems, allowing elaboration of the thematic maps. Thematic maps enable obtain rainfall intensities for places without rain gauge data and/or precarious time-series data. Therefore, these maps are a great tool for the design of hydraulic structures related to urban and rural micro-drainage.
