Metastatic tumors of the skin

Abstract: The clinical and pathologic features of cutaneous metastasis were studied in 724 patients, with histopathologic confirmation of both the primary tumors and the secondary lesions in the skin. Cutaneous metastatic lesions from carcinoma of the lung and kidney were usually found in men, were often recognized before the primary tumor, and appeared in almost every area of the skin surface. Metastasis from carcinoma of the breast to the skin occurred almost exclusively in women, tended to be localized to the anterio… Show more

“…Studies performed during the past 50 years found that about 1 to 5 % of all visceral malignancies form skin metastasis [9]. Nevertheless, the prevalence may increase due to the longer survival of cancer patients [10][11][12]. Although skin is usually involved in a later stage of progression, it is the first sign of dissemination in a small fraction of cases [13][14][15].…”

“…270,288 The metastatic renal cell tumors often have granular debris in their stroma and a finely arborizing vascular pattern. In the modern era, the use of antibodies to TTF enables easy distinction of pulmonary primary large cell carcinomata in which TTF is almost uniformly expressed, from those clear cell carcinomas primary in the skin in which TTF studies are negative.…”

“…A proportion of clear cell neoplasms of ovary, kidney and endometrium may have a hobnail pattern which is absent in the primary cutaneous clear cell carcinoma. 270,[288][289][290] As with other eccrine cancers, the clear cell variant expresses CEA, which is uniformly negative in renal cell cancer and typically is also not expressed in neoplasms of ovary and endometrium. 278 …”
