Metabolic Interdependence of Vitamin B1 and Manganese. Reciprocal Neutralization of Their Toxic Effects.

Abstract: weight during 10 (lays following hypopliysectoniy in the pigeon, and also cytological evidence of stimulation in their cortical cells, are found to agree satisfactorily with Moon's method of assay of adrenocorticotropin in 21-day rats. As tested by these 3 methods the ability of pituitary extracts to stimulate cortical tissue is independent of their prolactin. FSH and thyrotropin potencies. Gamone stimulates both cortical and medullary tissue in both normal and hypophysectomized pigeons. Estrone stimulates cor… Show more

“…Presumably, any interference with this act would result in impairment or alteration in maternal behaviour with respect to the young. Indeed, cannibalism is said by a number of workers to result from just such dietary insufficiency or toxicity (Perla, 1939;Perla & Sandberg, 1939;Carlson & Hoelzel, 1948;Hankin, 1958Hankin, , 1960Karmurthi, Sreenivasamoorthy & Parpia, 1972). On the other hand, Hauschka (1952) believes nutritional deficiency an unlikely explanation for cannibalistic behaviour, and while he found some genetic control of cannibalistic tendencies, he considers the phenomenon to represent a disoriented grooming device.…”

“…However, it must be considered that the yeast can also synthesize lipids, phosphoric acid ester of sugars, glycogen and polyphosphoric acid. Thus Perla and Sandberg (18) found a relationship between thiamine meta bolism and manganese metabolism, and manganese was assumed to act as an oxidative catalyst when thiamine is utilized in tissues. Perla (19) observed the accumulation of mangenese in thiamine-depleted rats and the intoxication due to extremely excessive thiamine could be prevented by a small amount of manganese.…”
