Melatonina: modulador de morte celular

Abstract: Apoptosis or planned cell death is a biological phenomenon that is essential for the development and maintenance of a cell population. In this process, senescent or damaged cells are eliminated after activation of a cell death program involving participation of pro-apoptotic molecules (Fas, Bax, caspases 2,3,6,7, 8 and 9). Molecule activation causes typical morphological changes, such as cell shrinkage, loss of adhesion to the extracellular matrix and neighboring cells, chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentati… Show more

“…Some members of the Bcl-2 family modulate the activation of caspases ( 39 ). For example, Bcl-2 inhibits the release of cytochrome c by mitochondria, thereby preventing cell death ( 40 , 41 ). Therefore, in the present study, we focused on Bcl-2 in a preliminary investigation of a possible role for apoptosis in GEM resistance.…”

“…Even melatonin metabolites have free radical scavenger properties, thus triggering multiple synergistic antioxidative factors, a phenomenon referred to as the cascade effect [ 20 , 21 ]. The antiapoptotic effect was also remarkable and is based on reduction of Bcl2 expression and caspase-3 activity [ 22 ]. The enhancement of ovarian graft function is also attributable to melatonin, given that it is known to modulate steroidogenesis and ovulatory function [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Melatonin is cited in several studies as an important part of the neuroendocrine system, influencing the control of circadian rhythms and controlling various physiological processes (Ferreira et al, 2010). The sites in which the interaction between melatonin and the endocrine system occur are still unclear.…”
