Medium-Term Prognosis of Young Japanese Adults Having Acute Myocardial Infarction

Abstract: lthough young adults are a relatively small proportion of those having acute myocardial infarction (AMI), they are an important group to examine with regard to risk factor modification and secondary prevention. Previous studies have indicated that patients less than 40 years old comprise between 2% and 6% of all AMIs 1-3 and that AMI in young patients has different characteristics from that in older patients. Young AMI patients are characterized by a relatively high incidence of normal coronary arteries, non-o… Show more

“…5,21,22 However, there are no data regarding the association of obesity with atherosclerosis and CHD in Japanese young adults. Recently, we showed that young Japanese patients with AMI have a higher BMI than older patients 6 and in the present report, we have demonstrated for the first time that obesity is an independent AMI risk factor in young and middle-aged Japanese males.…”

“…3 Patients older than 70 have been shown to be at risk for overt coronary artery disease and for exercise-induced silent ischemia based on age alone even when asymptomatic. 4 Many risk factors have been identified for the development of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in elderly patients.…”
