Medium-sized to large mammals of Serra do Tombador, Cerrado of Brazil

Abstract: Abstract:The Cerrado is the second largest biome of Brazil and one of the most threatened, mainly due to habitat conversion and agricultural expansion. At the same time, the fauna of the Cerrado is poorly known. In this study, undertaken from April to July of 2012, we provide a checklist of the medium-sized to large mammals recorded by camera traps in the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Serra do Tombador, a private protected area located in northern Goiás state. With a total effort of 2,340 camera-day… Show more

“…Studies conducted both in conservation units (CUs) and outside protected areas have recorded high mammal richness in the Cerrado. Depending on the locality, richness has varied between 17 and 27 species in CUs (Oliveira et al 2009b;Leite et al 2016;Cabral et al 2017) and between 15 and 25 species on private property (Cáceres et al 2010;Lessa et al 2012;Estrela et al 2015). Thus, the richness of medium-sized and large mammals recorded in the present study agrees with other studies carried out in areas of Cerrado in Brazil (Rocha and Dalponte 2006).…”

“…Many inventories of large-and medium-sized mammals have been conducted in conservation units (CUs) (Rodrigues et al 2002;Câmara and Oliveira 2012;Leite et al 2016;Cabral et al 2017); however, only 8.34% of the Cerrado is part of the system of protected areas (Françoso et al 2015). Most of the mammal populations are outside of CUs and are more susceptible to anthropic impacts.…”

“…On an ampler, and more directly comparable scale, the mammalian faunas recorded in fragments of Atlantic Forest in other regions of Brazil, such as São Paulo and Minas Gerais, were between 52% and 67% similar to that recorded in the present study (Magioli et al, 2014;Machado et al, 2016;Laurindo et al, 2017;Bovo et al, 2018 The similarities were even greater in comparison with fragments of Cerrado savanna, protected or otherwise, with an average of 83% of species in common (Rodrigues et al, 2002;Bocchiglieri et al, 2010;Campos et al, 2013;Leite et al, 2016;Cabral et al, 2017), reflecting the considerable influence of this biome on the mammalian fauna of the study area. The species richness recorded in the present study is probably also a reflection of the vegetation structure of the fragments surveyed, which are formed predominantly by seasonal semi-deciduous Atlantic Forest in transition with areas of Cerrado savanna (Melo et al 2013).…”

“…In general, species of Cingulata listed for the state are common and widely distributed, being found in different types of environments and domains. The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) and the yellow armadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus) are the most frequent species (Rodrigues et al 2002;Bernardo & Melo 2013;Calaça et al 2018;Feijó et al 2018), being tolerant to disturbed environments, although they are rare in places where they suffer intense hunting pressure (Cabral et al 2017). We consider Cabassous squamicaudis as a full species as treated by Feijó & Langguth (2013).…”
