“…The second trend, the medialization of politics, has been observed in political communication research (Sarcinelli 1998;Kepplinger 2002;Schulz 2006;Imhof 2006;Vowe 2006), but its implications for the way in which scientific expertise becomes relevant for policy making have yet not been fully acknowledged. Medialization of politics means that politics is increasingly oriented toward the mass media.…”

“…The concept of medialization goes a step further, however, in that it assumes an institutionalization of attention to mass media coverage and an internalization of media criteria on all levels of the policy making process. Imhof (2006) has argued that nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) who want to communicate their claims to politicians have learnt to make use of the susceptibility of politics to media coverage and that established actors have in the meantime taken up and adapted themselves to this mechanism as well. Referring to Imhof's analysis, Peters et al (2008) hypothesize that the medialization of science, as diagnosed by Weingart (2001), is a consequence of the medialization of politics and the necessity for academic science to legitimize research.…”
