Medicinal species with gastroprotective activity found in the Brazilian Cerrado

Abstract: Peptic and/or duodenal ulcers are characterized by diverse acute and chronic ulcerative lesions that commonly arise in any portion of the gastric mucosa that is exposed to the aggressive action of gastric acid. The pathophysiology of peptic ulcers has been attributed to an imbalance between aggressive and protective factors. In Brazil, medicinal plants are commonly used to treat this ailment. A country with great biodiversity, Brazil is considered a rich source of therapeutic products. There have been popular … Show more

“…The plants of this genus present bioactive compounds, which confirms the effectiveness of some traditional medicine indications [60]. There are several scientific works that indicate gastroprotective activity, phytochemical and antimicrobial activity, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action, as well as antidiarrheal and healing properties for duodenal and gastric ulcers [6164]. However, a recent study about the genus Hymenaea spp.…”

“…[1][2][3] Due to its large size and great variety of climate and biomes, Brazil has a high biodiversity popularly used to treat different diseases. 4,5 These biological properties are attributed to the secondary metabolite contents, which are ecologically important for the plant to protect against solar radiation, and microbial and herbivore attacks. 6,7 Their accumulation in plants is described in the literature, as being influenced by changes in the environmental conditions, such as temperature, sunlight, water availability, pollution, nutrients, herbivore and microbial attacks and others.…”

“…Mucus is one of the most important parameters that contribute to the protection of gastric mucosa. Gastric mucus is responsible for the first line of defense of the gastric mucosa and consists of a transparent viscous, elastic, adherent gel that is made up of water and glycoproteins (Martins et al, 2015). The mucus layer is a physical barrier that adheres together with bicarbonate and protects the underlying mucosa from proteolytic digestion (Allen and Flemstrom, 2005).…”
