Bu araştırma hemşirelik öğrencilerinin kültürlerarası duyarlılık ve etnik merkezcilik düzeylerini, etkileyen faktörleri belirlemek amacıyla planlandı. Materyal-Metot: Tanımlayıcı tipteki araştırma bir üniversitenin hemşirelik bölümünde gerçekleştirildi. Araştırmada Kişisel Bilgi Formu, Kültürlerarası Duyarlılık Ölçeği (KDÖ) ve Etnik Merkezcilik Ölçeği (EMÖ) kullanıldı. Araştırma Ocak-Mart 2018 tarihlerinde araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 460 hemşirelik öğrencisi ile yürütüldü. Bulgular: Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 20,56±1,62 olup, öğrencilerin %86,3'ü kadın idi. Öğrencilerin %72,4'ü hemşireliği isteyerek seçtiğini, %51,5'i başka kültürlerle bir arada olmayı istediğini, %54,1'i başka kültürlerde arkadaşı olduğunu belirtti. Öğrencilerin KDÖ puan ortalaması 76,67±7,27 ve EMÖ puan ortalaması ise 55,40±6,68 idi. Öğrencilerin cinsiyet, başka kültürlerle bir arada olmayı isteme ve başka kültürlerden arkadaşı olma durumuna göre KDÖ ve EMÖ puanları arasında anlamlı fark bulundu. Ayrıca öğrencilerin KDÖ ve EMÖ puanları arasında negatif yönde anlamlı ilişki belirlendi. Sonuç: Öğrencilerin kültürlerarası duyarlılık düzeylerinin ortalamanın üzerinde ve etnik merkezcilik düzeylerinin ise ortalamanın altında olduğu saptandı. KDÖ puan ortalaması kadın öğrencilerde, başka kültürlerle bir arada olmayı isteyen, başka kültürlerden arkadaşı olan öğrencilerde daha yüksek idi. EMÖ puan ortalaması ise erkek öğrencilerde, başka kültürlerle bir arada olmayı istemeyen, başka kültürlerden arkadaşı olmayan öğrencilerde daha yüksek idi. Öğrencilerin kültürlerarası duyarlılıkları arttıkça etnik merkezcilik düzeylerinin azaldığı belirlendi. Sağlık ekibinin bir üyesi olacak hemşirelik öğrencilerinin henüz öğrencilik dönemlerinde kültürler arası duyarlılık düzeylerinin desteklenmesi önerilmektedir.

This article describes the findings of a study aimed at producing a set of cultural literacy-oriented critical reading teaching material. This material is developed as a countermeasure to the increasingly thin sensitivity of society, especially the students toward noble values of religion, custom, and culture. With this material student get a significant critical understanding of the discourse with the content of noble value of Indonesian culture. The understanding is attained by students through active reader strategy. There are four important principles developed in understanding the text through this strategy, namely 1) building basic understanding of the text, 2) conducting reading activities in chronological order of the text, 3) identifying the style and language of the text, and 4) critically deepening the understanding of the text. The emphasis on cultural critical understanding became the focus of this research. Thus, critical reading question technique 501 is required. With this technique student can predict causation, establish logical and emotive understanding, and predict the implications of ideas. The implementation of development of this teaching material is based on the stages of Design Based Research. Data is obtained through expert scales and trials to junior high school students in Bandung. The result of this research is a critical reading textbook based on cultural literacy with active reader strategy that is effective to be used for junior high school students. The implication of this research is the acquisition of students' sensitivity toward noble values of religion, custom, and culture that can be internalized in their lives.

BackgroundThe advances in communication and transportation facilities have accelerated the formation of multicultural societies worldwide. Personality traits may be one of the most important indicators of adapting to multicultural environments. Educational environ-ments are multicultural in terms of the composition of students they serve. The present study investigated the predictive role of Big Five and Dark Triad personality traits on multicultural attitude and efficacy (MAE) among teacher candidates.Participants and procedureThe study population comprised of teacher candidates (N = 404) studying in Turkey. In order to collect data, Big Five personali-ty and the Dark Triad, the Adjective Based Personality Scale and the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen Scale were used respectively. In addition, data regarding MAE were collected through the Multicultural Efficacy Scale.ResultsThe results showed that openness to new experience positively (β = .16, p < .01) and psychopathy negatively (β = –.16, p < .01) predicted multicultural attitude. On the other hand, multicultural efficacy was positively predicted only by openness to new experience (β = .32, p < .001). Therefore, openness and psychopathic traits can play an important role in explaining multi-cultural attitude and efficacy. Also, there is no significant difference with regard to teacher candidates’ multicultural efficacy and attitudes according to their grade level.ConclusionsIndividuals with openness to new experiences personality trait have a positive attitude towards multiculturalism, and they view themselves as competent to get involved in multicultural environments. On the other hand, individuals with the psychopathy personality trait have negative attitudes towards multiculturalism.
