Mechanisms for mobile phone use in empowerment: A critical realist study of people with disabilities in Nigeria

Abstract: Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are gradually becoming important artifacts for people with disabilities (PWDs). This paper investigates the use of mobile phones in the daily activities of PWDs in sub‐Saharan Africa. The study argues that mobile phone use empowers PWDs, but little is known about what contextual factors and under what underlying mechanisms such empowerment occurs. By adopting Thapa and Omland's (2018) critical realism methodology, we aim to understand the underlying mechanisms,… Show more

“…Multiple studies have explored the advancements in mobile technologies and their use over the decade mainly from the perspective of businesswomen, patients, disabled, farmers, marginalized people, and fishermen (Ajumobi & Kyobe, 2017; Dasuki & Zamani, 2019; Iliya & Ononiwu, 2021; Misaki et al, 2018; Salia et al, 2011; Sam, 2015). Since the literature has mostly concentrated on the developing and the developed countries, the mobile phone usage behavior is underexplored in the Gulf countries (Alharthi & Islam, 2021; Zaidan, 2017), which lies in‐between the developing and the developed world as high‐income countries (Callen et al, 2014).…”

“…In the context of empowerment communication in thematic villages, the selection of appropriate communication tools is crucial, and this should align with the characteristics of the participants and the communication's purpose [36]. The utilization of social media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and village websites, as communication tools in empowerment efforts, reflects a strategic choice that complements the characteristics and objectives of the communication process [37]. As indicated in the interview with Suhendra HMS on June 12, 2023, the use of village Instagram accounts and websites, along with messaging platforms like WhatsApp, serves as instrumentalities for facilitating direct and indirect communication within the thematic villages.…”

“…There is no well-known or traditional methodological approach for identifying mechanisms (Bygstad & Munkvold, 2011), except a few concrete examples of applying CR as a methodological framework provided by authors such as Fletcher ( 2017), Iliya and Ononiwu (2020) and Thapa and Omland (2018). The stepwise framework, despite its shortcoming, is becoming widely applied in critical realist data analysis and has been demonstrated to be useful in the process of mechanism identification (Bygstad et al, 2016).…”
