Mechanical properties of acrylic bone cement containing PMMA-SiO2 hybrid sol-gel material

Abstract: An organic-inorganic hybrid material, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-SiO2 (SiO2 content of 72 wt%), was prepared by incorporating PMMA structure units covalently into an SiO2 glass network via the sol-gel approach. The hybrid sol-gel material PMMA-SiO2 was subsequently used as the solid powder component of bone cement and its mechanical properties were evaluated. The effects of the addition of tricalcium phosphate (TCP), hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) on the prop… Show more

“…The compound PVPCS20/FHAp and PVPCS 60/FHAp showed significant protection against HRBC membrane rupture which is induced by hypotonic saline (Wang et al 2008;Wiria et al 2008;Yang et al 1997;Yanbao et al 2008;OECD). The effect may be due to the resistance caused by polymers in the destruction of erythrocyte membrane.…”

“…PMMA-silica hybrid composites have been prepared for dental restorative and bone replacement applications [68][69][70]. In this case, trimethoxysilyl functional groups, which are reactive in the sol-gel process, are introduced to polymethylmethacrylate through the copolymerization of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MSMA) with methyl methacrylate (MMA), using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator.…”

“…Yang et al used PMMA-silica hybrid composites as filler to reinforce PMMA bone cement, changing the hybrid content from 0 to 60 % [69,71]. The Youngs modulus and compressive strength are improved by the addition of the PMMA-SiO 2 hybrid material, although the tensile strength decreases due to the different particle size of PMMA-SiO 2 and PMMA.…”

“…Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is an important thermoplastic material with excellent transparency. The preparation and thermal degradation of many PMMA/inorganic nanoparticles have been investigated extensively [5][6][7].The preparation of PMMA via a radical polymerization generally involves the formation of unsaturated end groups and head-head (H-H) linkages due to the disproportionation and coupling reaction. These abnormal structures are possibly responsible for the poor thermal stability of PMMA.…”
