Mechanical Behavior and Damage Processes of Udimet 720Li: Influence of Localized Plasticity at Grain Boundaries

Abstract: The creep-fatigue properties at 700°C of cast and wrought Udimet 720Li superalloy have been investigated. As expected, the introduction of a dwell time as low as 1s at maximum stress induces a creep-fatigue life debit compared to pure fatigue conditions. It is demonstrated that the mechanical behavior (plastic strain rate, ductility) is greatly affected by the grain size and precipitation distribution. Moreover, the creep-fatigue life seems to be hardly affected by the alloy microstructure, due to the developm… Show more

“…The slip band activities are illustrated in Figure 11 of Ref. [34], wherein the crack behaviour of redirection within a grain is presented. In addition, the contribution of compressional loading may also be explained by the behaviour of atomic bonds.…”

“…The strain map in the circled region in Fig. 13(a and b) shows grain configurations that lead to the activation of levels of high localized plasticity induced by constrained slip in the neighboring grain [38]. Furthermore, the black arrows in Fig.…”

“…For instance, the circled region in Fig. 13(b) shows critical grain configurations leading to the activation of a micro volume [38], which is resolved in Fig. 13(a), where plasticity is transmitted from the intersection of a highly strained slip band into the adjacent grain, changing the local loading conditions.…”
