Meat demand in South Korea: A systems estimate and policy projections

Abstract: The results of a systems estimate of the South Korean meat sector are presented. The system is well behaved in that it satisfies the theoretical restrictions. Some of the parameters of the demand system are then used to simulate the effects of trade liberalization in the South Korean beef sector. The results indicate that South Korea would reduce its trade surplus by as much as $800 million by 1999 if its beef sector was liberalized. The principal beneficiaries of this liberalization would be the United States… Show more

“…The results of this estimation broadly coincide within the range of income elasticities (0.57 -1.0) and price elasticities (0.34 -1.04) in South Korea and Japan from previous studies such as Hayes et al, (1990) and Hayes et al (1991). The Hayes et al studies were based on 1961-1987 and 1947-1978 average data in South Korea and Japan respectively and also employed an LA/AIDS model.…”

“…BSE and bird flu scares caused a fall in demand for beef and chicken and an upturn in demand for pork and fish products, substitutes for beef and chicken in Japan. Hayes, Ahn, and Baumel (1991) analyzed meat demand in South Korea using AIDS. They found all own-price elasticities to be negative.…”
