Relationship violence is a common problem faced by adolescents in the United States. In general, adolescents are at higher risk for relationship victimization than adults (Silverman, Raj, Mucci, & Hathaway, 2001), and females between the ages of 16 and 24 years are at the highest risk of relationship victimization (Rennison, 2001). This study uses data from the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance (YRBSS) System (or referred to as Youth Risk Behavior Survey [YRBS]; N = 11,781) of adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 years to estimate two logistic regression models on the association between relationship violence and suicidal behaviors controlling for variables such as sexual assault and drug use. The findings indicated that victimized adolescents are at higher risk for planning and/or attempting suicide compared to nonvictimized adolescents. Implications for research and practice are explored.
The oil economy of Nigeria is very important to the country, but the people of Nigeria still suffer from a corrupt government. Despite the revenues being brought in from oil exports, the Nigerian government still holds a large unemployment rate and a high poverty rate. This paper shows the amount of oil being produced per day, as well as, the process by which the oil is brought to the market. This paper also shows the labor to GDP ratio, the major exports, and the major imports of Nigeria. Finally, an understanding of the ethnic struggle within Nigeria is looked at, as well as, the illegal oil racketeering that is costing the Nigerian governments billions of dollars. Until the people of Nigeria can take control of its government and rid themselves of the crushing militias that controls the politics in Nigeria, the people are doomed to suffer.
This study will identify the extent in which American oil companies make billions daily from oil production, while local Nigerians suffer daily from poverty. The focus of this research will be on the population of Niger Delta, Shell Oil Company and the Nigerian government. I will define and establish an illustration of the poverty-structured environment that surrounds Niger Delta and the revenue success of Shell Oil Company and Nigerias government. This research will open the eyes of American oil companies, Nigerias federal government and people around the world to the revenue that is coming into Nigeria, but the communities are still living in poverty. Something needs to be done; if something is not done, some the people of Niger Delta will continue to retaliate.
Homicide is the one of the most heinous crime however in most cases it is related to social interaction between people. Disaggregating the homicide data based on victim-offender relationship can provide additional information that would otherwise have been overlooked. This study seeks to determine the relationship between the selected situational and socio-demographic variables and the victim-offender relationship among the juvenile homicides. The situational and demographic variables that were statistically significant in the Chi Square test were also significant in the logistic regression model using acquaintance homicide as the dependent variable. This research revealed that among the demographic variables-gender, marital status, education and race were all statistically significant. Routine activity theory provided an excellent framework for understanding crime but also for implementation and intervention strategies for different types of homicide.
During the past decade, web-based distance education has created a profound impact on education and learning. It has increased access and expanded educational opportunities of many students. The National Center for Educational Statistics reported that over 50% of post-secondary institutions now offer a number of web-based courses. Peterson's Guide to Distance Learning programs reported that over 75 programs in criminal justice or criminology. Although increasing number of courses are being offered through the web-based distance modality, it is however important to determine the perceptions of students to its use. The study therefore attempted to determine the perceptions on web-based distance education by students in the justice studies department at a Historically Black University. The Chi Square and correlational analysis revealed that age-group, gender, year in school and study time were statistically significant. A binomial regression with student's major as the outcome was most robust with an R-Square of 0.522. Gender, study time and year in university were statistically significant at the .05 level and having done a web-based distance course. There was therefore a statistically significant variation in the perceptions of the students in justice Journal of Educational Issues ISSN 2377-2263 2018 www.macrothink.org/jei 16 studies towards web-based distance education.
This study examined the impact of stress by exploring the relationship between coping strategies and psychological responses such as stress, anxiety and depression among African American women in the academic setting. Research suggests African American women’s coping strategies have an impact on their academic performance. Findings in this study were consistent with previous research that supports a complex coping strategy. Examination of emotion-oriented, task-oriented, and avoidance coping strategies provided insight into the various coping strategies. Avoidance coping strategies were further divided into social diversion and distraction. African- American women who reportedly experienced high levels of stress and low levels of anxiety and depression used a combination of coping strategies. Emotional-oriented coping was found positively correlated with anxiety and depression. Task-oriented and avoidance coping were also correlated with lower levels of anxiety and depression.
The urban forest holds several important positions within the built and unbuilt environments. Those positions include economic, health, sustainability, quality of life measures, and overall protection of the environment, including air, water, and soil. The points are highlighted by Wolf (2005;2007); McPherson (2005) and Rowntree and Nowak (1991). This research references the four socio-economic sectors; the public or government sector, for profit or market sector, philanthropic or nonprofit sector, and the household or private sector (Biggs and Helms, 2007). The common purposes and role of each sector with respect to the urban tree cover takes on importance as they interrelate with concerns for public health, economic viability, tree coverage, tree placement, ecological relationships, and public policy. Harris County and its 52 heterogeneous subgovernmental units serve as the study area and the base for the administration of a random internet-based survey. Additionally, the research used urban tree canopy data to relate socio-economics, household preferences, sustainability measures, and overall environmental consciousness to gauge the sectors" connection to the urban forest. The research used multiple correlation analysis and regression modeling with secondary data. The research incorporated the results of the primary data collected, employed hierarchal linear modeling to address the perceived problem of a lack of concern for the urban forest and sustainability in respect to sectoral frame of reference in answering the survey questions. The element of willingness and receptivity serves as independent variables and overall environmental sustainability. The results can help policy makers promote sustainable initiatives that enhance the urban forest and protect the overall natural environment for the benefit of all, now and in the future. Contribution/ Originality:This study is one of very few studies that examined the urban forest resource as a critical element of our overall ecosystem with values and benefits that far outweigh the cost of maintainance and or expansion. The study also demonstrated that awareness and knowledge precipitates action. How we act though, may require clarity of understanding of the various roles of all the sectors and how each sector, may or may not, take, or be willing to take responsibility for our urban tree canopy"s future. There is a need for a balance within the ecosystem in order to enhance as well as retain our natural heritage of our homes, communities, and regions, by protection of the urban forest, both its resources and benefits. The public in general may not perceive the urban forest as an economic good, but often as an abstraction and not accounted as real property.
Historically, the drug industry has been one of the most profitable in the United States of America and has been attributed to the relatively high cost of drugs compared to other developed countries. The call on drug companies to reduce the costs has increased tremendously with the industry strongly resisting, claiming costs are justified to support research and development of newer and better drugs. This debate is currently ongoing in the legislature with strong lobbying from both sides of the divide. Hence, the main objective of this research is to determine the reasons for the high cost of prescription drugs in the United States compared to other countries and suggest ways to make drugs more affordable. The solution to the problem will most likely come from a compromise by both sides involving government funded research and production of generic drugs by companies. This would bring down the cost of drugs while ensuring continuation of research and development and guarantee reasonable profits for the drug industry.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
