Process planning is confronting changes in terms of Industry 4.0. If the strategy and the investment plan are not defined properly, changes might cause loss. This emphasizes the importance of the readiness factor calculation. The factor expresses the current stage of development and enables the definition of a plan of action with respect to a goal. This paper gives a state-of-the-art preview of existing readiness factor calculation methods both within scientific and commercial approaches. Relation between the Industry 4.0, process planning and readiness factor calculation methods is examined and the scientific gap in the field is detected. This has enabled to create a framework of the new readiness factor calculation method, specialized for process planning in Industry 4.0.

The digitization of the manufacturing industry, 10 years after the introduction of the Industry 4.0 concept, is still one of the most demanding tasks for the companies, especially for SMEs. As one of the biggest barriers in new business model implementation, the lack of strategy and workforce skills is frequently mentioned in the literature. The high level of investments it requires and the perception of high risks with unclear future benefits can be avoided with readiness factor calculation. This paper presents a novel model for readiness factor calculation, oriented to process planning and based on decision support systems. The model enables the definition of the optimal strategic plan for the digitization with the use of decision support systems (analytic hierarchy process) and through the use of statistical methods implemented within the model it minimizes the influence of human subjectivity and quantification of qualitative criteria. This innovative approach enables the understanding of the transition process to new technology-enabled business models, in this case oriented towards process planning. The useability and reliability of the model is proven in a case study of a metal machining company.

Industry 4.0 is an element of entrepreneurial strategy to survive to rapidly and constantly changing markets. Several studies acknowledge that small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) face challenges initiating innovation processes towards digital transformation. However, the success of the so called fourth industrial revolution will ultimately depend on whether SMEs can adopt and implement these technologies, as they represent the backbone of numerous economies worldwide. The present study aims at presenting the characteristics of a roadmap service supporting SMEs in the manufacturing and building sector throughout the technological and organisational planning of Industry 4.0 in their business strategies. The results of a social experiment to validate the selected design thinking techniques show that most of them enable innovation dynamics in creativity workshops for Industry 4.0 roadmaps and are useful for deriving an implementation plan for Industry 4.0 in SMEs.
