Measuring MNm torques as part of a prototype testing campaign of a high-temperature superconducting generator for wind turbine application in the scope of the Ecoswing project

Abstract: Modern wind turbines have a driving torque in the range of up to 10 MNm. The measurement of such high torques poses challenges, as there is no standard measurement equipment for this torque level available today. During the EU funded EcoSwing project, the world’s first superconducting low-cost and lightweight multi-megawatt wind turbine generator has been designed and tested on the DyNaLab nacelle test rig of Fraunhofer IWES. For this test campaign, a specifically designed torque measurement system has been de… Show more

“…Before being installed on the wind turbine, the HTS generator had been tested on the ground to minimize potential risks and improve the plannability of the commissioning on the turbine. The ground testing used a test bench available at DyNaLab, which offers an almost realistic environment in the multi-MW range to carry out various tests under reproducible conditions [24].…”

“…The torque measurement system is based on a force-lever system in a symmetrical arrangement, so that driving torques coming from outer flanges can be directly measured. A detailed description of the propsoed torque measurement system can be found in [20]. Overall, apart from some adaption integration and engineering efforts, no radical changes were needed to test the HTS generator on this test bench.…”
