Measuring Agronomic and Environmental Soil Phosphorus Saturation and Predicting Phosphorus Leaching with Mehlich 3

Abstract: The role that soil testing can play in identifying agricultural soils with an increased potential for P loss is an important topic. Our research compared the Mehlich 3 P saturation ratio (M3‐PSR) with the ammonium oxalate degree of P saturation (DPSox), and the M3‐PSR was then evaluated for predicting agronomic and environmental soil P saturation thresholds. Intact soil columns (15‐cm diam, 20 cm deep) and soil samples were collected from five soil series that ranged in soil texture, chemical properties, and M… Show more

“…Other investigators have observed that the PSR can be a tool to predict P leaching and runoff (Maguire and Sims, 2002). The PSR values for soils in this study were all below 0.12, which is lower than the changepoint of 0.20 beyond which PSR and P leaching were highly correlated (Maguire and Sims, 2002).…”

“…The extracts were then analyzed using ICAP-OES for concentrations of P, Al and Fe. A P sorption ratio (PSR) for soils was calculated from the Mehlich 3 data as: (mmol P)/(mmol Al + mmol Fe), as per Maguire and Sims (2002).…”

“…Higher values of Fe+Al calculated with ammonium oxalate were found in soils with higher clay contents, although a high maximum value of 1,797 mg kg -1 was also obtained for sandy soils. In general, ammonium oxalate extracts greater amounts of Fe+Al than Mehlich-1 and Mehlich-3, mainly in soils with higher clay content (Maguire & Sims, 2002;Nair et al, 2004).…”

Ammonium oxalate is not often used in these tests in Southern Brazil, being only used to determine Fe content in soils (Tedesco et al, 2004).…”

“…Another risk of P-mobilizing species is that the mobilized P might leach and reach the groundwater and then streams and rivers, contributing to their eutrophication (Djodjic et al 2004). This risk should be managed by measuring both agronomic and environmental soil P saturation, and fertilizing accordingly (Maguire and Sims 2002).…”
