Degree of phosphorus saturation threshold for minimizing P losses by runoff in cropland soils of Southern Brazil

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to assess the risk of phosphorus losses by runoff through an index based on the degree of P saturation (DPS), in cropland soils of Southern Brazil. Sixty-five highly representative cropland soils from the region were evaluated. Three labile P forms were measured (Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3, and ammonium oxalate), and four P sorption indexes were tested (phosphorus single sorption point and Fe+Al determined with the three extractors). Water-extractable P (WEP) was used as an index of P… Show more

“…The WSP ranged from 0 to 0.31 mg L −1 and had strong and significant correlations with PSR ( r = .66, P < .001) and SPSC (r = −.67, P < .001), similar to observations in other studies (Bortolon et al., 2016; Chakraborty, Nair, Harris, & Rhue, 2012; Nair et al., 2004; Wang, Zhang, O'Halloran, Tan, & Hu, 2016). Relationship thresholds were observed when the PSC‐based indices were plotted against WSP values.…”

“…However, independently of fertilizer, available P content increased as a function of P dose in all assessed layers ( Table 2). Although the soil P levels obtained in all treatments were very high according to the ranges proposed by Silva et al (2016), P availability in oxidic soils is strictly controlled by the mineral phase, when this nutrient is strongly adsorbed, and by the large number of adsorbent sites present in the entire profile of this soil type (Shuai & Zinati, 2009;Bortolon et al, 2016;Fink et al, 2016), which allows controlling P fixation and release from fertilizers even when soil P content is high.…”

“…In the case of the Ultisols and the Entisols, DPS reached 31% in Typic Udorthent (Table 2). In another study to assess the risk of P losses using DPS, Bortolon et al (2016) evaluated eight of the most representative cropland soil types in southern Brazil and found DPS values ranging from 4.6 to 79.9%, with an average of 28%.…”
