Measurement of the Density of Ni-Cr Alloy by a Modified Pycnometric Method

Abstract: A modified pycnometric method has been developed to obtain the accurate density value of liquid nickel and Ni-Cr alloy in the liquid and solid-liquid coexistence states. The density of liquid nickel decreases linearly with increasing temperature in the range from the melting point to 1873 K. The density at the melting point and the volume thermal expansion coefficient of liquid nickel are 7.91 MgÁm À3 and 1:87 Â 10 À4 K À1 , respectively. The density of Ni-Cr alloys in the liquid and solid-liquid coexistence s… Show more

“…The experimental procedures used have been described in detail in previous papers. 1,2) The experimental samples of Ni-base binary alloys are composed of Ni (80 mass%)-X (20 mass%, X=Co, W, Ta, Al) master alloy discs cut from high purity Ni (80 mass%)-X (20 mass%) master alloy ingot rods, and the insufficient nickel mass is replenished by nickel disc cut from high purity nickel rod. The chemical compositions of the alloy elements in the alloys after experiments were analysed by radio frequency inductively coupled plasma (I.C.P.)…”

“…The principles of the two methods and their advantages have been detailed in previous papers. 1,2) The densities of liquid nickel and Ni-Cr alloys in liquid and mushy states have been measured precisely by both methods. These two methods (MSDM and MPM) have the following advantages over the traditional sessile drop method and pycnometric method, .…”

“…[5][6][7] In this paper, both MSDM and MPM were employed to measure the densities of liquid ternary model alloys (Ni-CoAl, molar fraction x Ni :x Co % 86:14, Al mass% = 0$11), liquid quaternary model alloys (Ni-Co-Al-Cr, Ni-Co-Al-Mo and Ni-Cr-Al-Mo), and four commercial Ni-based superalloys in liquid and mushy states. The chemical compositions of these model alloys were similar to those of commercial Nibased superalloys.…”

“…Furthermore, there are very few reports on the measurement of the density of Ni-based alloys in relation to the effects of composition and temperature. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] There are no reports on the measurement of the densities of liquid Ni-based multi-component model alloys such as ternary and quaternary alloys.…”
