A new drape elevator is developed to analyze the drape generation mechanism. The drape elevator can measure drape shape, including node generation at various stages during drape formation. The drape elevator method indicates better reproducibility of the drape coefficient of the fabrics than the conventional method. The drape formation process is experimentally found to consist of three stages, seeds generation, their development, and the final stabilizing stages. A new parameter R, evaluating the shape of the drape, is defined in terms of the drape projection. Both the R parameter and the drape coefficient are expected to be useful parameters for the quantitative analysis of fabric drape formation.

PurposeTo provide researchers with the details of developments in instruments to measure fabric drape and review the literature related to fabric drape.Design/methodology/approach – In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in investigating the aesthetic behavior of fabrics due to the developments in objective evaluation techniques. To understand drape behavior, it is essential to know how drape is measured quantitatively. This paper reviews research related to drape characteristics of fabrics, two‐dimensional instruments and analysis of drape by measuring stiffness, three‐dimensional instruments developed to measure drape, fabric mechanical properties and their influence on drape measurement, and the latest developments in the field including image analysis, the dynamic drape tester and other related research.Findings – Many instruments for measuring drape have been developed including the earliest that assessed stiffness of fabrics, later versions of drape meters and recent innovative instruments for capturing complex drape information. Even though extensive detail for simple geometric forms such as circles and squares can be provided by the newest methods, measurement of the drape characteristics of complex forms needs the consideration of researchers to extend the work on drape measurement to garments. It was also noted that there are some contradictory conclusions regarding the properties influencing fabric drape.Originality/value – This paper is offered as a concise reference for individuals beginning research in the area of fabric drape.

Conventional static and new dynamic drape coefficients of silk woven fabrics are examined precisely to distinguish those features of each classified fabric by its yarn structure using our regression equations. We find that Shantung has large values of static drape coefficient D, and small node number n, revolving drape increase coefficient D,., and dynamic drape coefficient with swinging motion Dd. Chirimen is characterized by large values of Dr and Dd. Georgette has small values of revolving drape coefficient at 200 rpm, D200. Habutae has relatively large values of Ds and small n, and Dechine has relatively large values of Dr and Dd, but Fujiginu has no peculiar features. The differences between Fujiginu, Dechine, and Georgette become clear from the discriminant analysis, using the five drape parameters as variables. New dynamic drape coefficients are more useful for characterizing each classified silk fabric.
