Measurement and estimation of thermophysical properties of nickel based superalloys

Abstract: Thermophysical properties for the solid and liquid phases of several Ni based superalloys (CMSX-4, CMSX-10, CM186LC, IN 738 and Rene 80) have been measured. The following properties were measured: heat capacity and enthalpy, thermal expansion coefficient and density, thermal diffusivity, viscosity and surface tension. Analysis of these measurements showed that that γ′ phase (Ni3Al) affected the values for the following properties; Cp, enthalpy, electrical resistivity, thermal diffusivity and conductivity. Rela… Show more

“…For CMSX-10, the measured density at RT agrees very well with a value of q(RT) = 9.05 g cm À3 given by Quested et al. [28] Scaling of the sample radius from RT to the solidus temperature was performed by dilatometer measurements. Results of the relative length change, DL/L o , between RT and T sol are given in Table II.…”

“…Published viscosity values for Ni-based superalloys at their liquidus temperatures fall in the range between 5.0 and 8.5 mPa.s as exemplified by e.g., for IN718 [54] and CMSX-4, [55] respectively. Other values are e.g., 7.4, 7.9, and 8.1 mPa.s for TMS75, CMSX-4, and IN-713LC, respectively, obtained by Sato [11] with the oscillating cup …”

“…As the latent heat of γ to γ transformation is typically around 120 kJ · mol −1 [11] (which has been experimentally checked for both N18 and N19 superalloys), this should produce a precipitation-induced local heating at an approximate rate of 2 K · s −1 , which is a typical cooling rate in the bulk part of a disk.…”

“…4a-c show a comparison between the measured and calculated CTEs of superalloys IN-738LC and CMSX-4 and also for the bond coat Amdry-995. The experimental measurements of CTEs in the IN-738LC and Amdry-995 samples were made during the current study, and those in CMSX-4 were extracted from the study in [47]. The nominal compositions of the materials are listed in Table 5, which were used as input for the modelling (except Y which was not supported by the thermodynamic database).…”
