Maternal serum resistin concentrations in gestational diabetes mellitus and normal pregnancies

Abstract: GDM is associated with increased resistin serum levels in term pregnancy as well as postpartum. Resistin is positively correlated to HOMA-IR at 26-28 weeks of gestation. A reduction in maternal resistin after delivery indicates a significant placental or fetal contribution in the production of resistin.

“…Our data confirm that the adipocyte-derived hormone, adiponectin, is a specific independent predictor of GDM in both obese and non-obese women and directly compares its performance with those of a number of other previously suggested markers such as CRP, SHBG and the adipokines neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), resistin and RBP-4 [14,[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][27][28][29][30][31][32].…”

“…Here, adiponectin was the best performing independent predictor of GDM, regardless of BMI grouping. SHBG, RBP-4, CRP and resistin have also been described as potential biomarkers of GDM in numerous publications [14,[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][28][29][30][31]. In this study, however, this potential was confirmed only for SHBG in obese women; in contrast, there was no significant difference in RBP-4, CRP and resistin levels between GDM patients and controls.…”

“…For instance, resistin has been reported to increase in GDM pregnancies from 28-38 weeks of pregnancy [21]. Also of note, there was no significant difference in BMI between women who were diagnosed with GDM and those who avoided recurrence in our cohort.…”

“…In agreement with the results of two previous studies [ 33 , 34 ], our findings showed that serum resistin levels were similar in the GDM and non- GDM subjects. By contrast, other studies have found lower [ 7 ] or higher [ 15 , 16 ] resistin levels in GDM patients compared to healthy pregnant women. These discrepancies mostly arise from the presence of heterogeneities in the several aspects of aforementioned studies.…”

“…Most of these findings showed no difference in the serum resistin level between GDM and normal glucose tolerant (NGT) subjects [ 13 , 14 ]. However, there are other reports indicating increased [ 15 , 16 ] or decreased [ 7 ] serum resistin concentrations in women with GDM compared with NGT pregnant women.…”
