Maternal pelvic size, measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, predicts infant birthweight

Abstract: Indicators of infant birthweight are important because infant birthweight is related to later health outcomes. This study developed and validated new measures of the pelvis from dual energy absorptiometry (DEXA). Predictors of the new measures of maternal pelvic size were examined and the pelvic size measures were examined as predictors of infant birthweight. Data were drawn from a sample of 326 women in Hawaii and their 608 infants. The women were 45-60 years old at the time of the DEXA bone scan and when the… Show more

“…3 Women with early menarche tend to have smaller pelvises. Novotny et al (2000) argue that maternal pelvic size is an important indicator of fetal growth which can be related to later health outcomes. Maternal nutrition influences the size, shape, and angle of the pelvis, especially nutrients influencing bone development.…”

“…Height and weight are well-known indicators of human development and state of health. Birthweight is a crucial factor influencing survival in the neonatal period and further growth and development (Battaglia et al, 1966;Ellis, 1973;De Scrilli et al, 1983;Łozińska and Radomska, 1995;Novotny et al, 2000;May et al, 2001). Height and weight of children and adolescents are used in evaluation of developmental age, regularity of development, and state of health (Tanner, 1962).…”

“…Despite the difficulties encountered when measuring the pelvis, it has been shown that external pelvimetry has high accuracy in determining the capacity of the pelvis (19,20) . Clinical pelvimetry is a simple and low-cost procedure, gives no exposure to radiation and can be carried out after minimal instruction.…”
