Guiding and transforming our creative practices, this paper argues for a critical investigation of the techno‐material affordances at play in doing visual research with digital media. It interrogates how software and skill might interact to mediate creative engagements with digital materialities. Drawing on two ethnographic case studies of and with the Korsakow System – an authoring system for creating generative multiple links between media assets – I show how software combined with other imaging technologies can (re‐)focus attention and action towards the intangible workings of digital code. Three exercises will demonstrate how a skilled mediation with relational media systems challenges and complements ethnographic filmmaking through the adoption of iterative software and design methodologies. Rather than gaining control over code, the aim is to gain control over the loss of it in the field and in front of the screen. In the context of an advancing digital visual ethnography, such a skilled mediation affords an experiential and responsive mode of knowledge production sensitising us to the complexly layered affordances and constraints of digital materialities and the dynamic density of relations in which they are entangled.

Los medios adoptan las nuevas formas interactivas e híbridas para enfrentarse al desafío de Internet y dar respuesta a las necesidades de unas audiencias más activas y permanentemente conectadas. Metodología: En este artículo, se presentan los resultados del análisis cualitativo de diez documentales interactivos publicados entre los años 2010 y 2016. Al mismo tiempo, se identifican tendencias en la renovación del periodismo junto a la propuesta de parámetros basados en la caracterización de esta forma narrativa. Resultados y conclusiones: El documental interactivo se encuentra en una fase de diversificación, ya consolidado en países como Francia, Estados Unidos y Canadá. En referencia a las características del género, se percibe un notable desarrollo y un destacado potencial, en contraste con el reto que supone un contexto en cambio.[EN] Introduction: Online journalism finds in interactive nonfiction an appropriate place for the development of stories. The media adopt new interactive and hybrid forms to face the challenge of the Internet and to respond to the needs of more active and permanently connected audiences. With reference to the features of the genre, a notable development and an outstanding potential have been perceived, in contrast to the challenge that represents a changing context.

Resumo: Este artigo aborda o documentário interativo produzido na Ibero-América a partir de um estudo exploratório-descritivo nos últimos cinco anos. A interatividade vai para além de uma contribuição seletiva e participativa em direção a um impacto de transformação social num determinado contexto. A proximidade, como foco das histórias no documentário interativo ibero-americano, leva a experiências e iniciativas que convidam a mudanças e ações, com suporte num forte caráter social. Palavras-chave: documentário interativo; Ibero-América; proximidade; transformação.Resumen: Este artículo aborda el documental interactivo producido en Iberoamérica a partir de un estudio exploratorio-descriptivo en los últimos cinco años. La interactividad va más allá de una contribución selectiva y participativa, hacia el impacto y la transformación social en un entorno. La proximidad, como foco de las historias en el documental interactivo iberoamericano, conduce a experiencias e iniciativas que invitan al cambio y la acción, basadas en un fuerte carácter social.
